When I was a girl

Birthdays meant a lot.

I had birthday cakes

With chocolate swirl,

Balloons on my cot.

But now I’m older,

No more a pearl,

They don’t mean

Quite the same.

We really should

Make a fuss

But there are just

Three of us,

Such a shame!

It does seem

Like yesterday

When I had the last.

Because of this

I really feel

They come ‘round

Much too fast.

I know I’m loved.

I’m sure of that.

Flowers even came

And birthday calls

And email notes

With birthday quotes.

Friends dropped by,

Making me cry.

But would you believe

I almost forgot

Twas my special day -

Until my husband said to me:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, you old PEA!
