"What do you mean it's over?" I yell into my phone.
"We just can't be together anymore, Kelly. Things are getting too complicated," my boyfriend, Luke, says.
"But baby--"
"Don't--"
"But Luke, I love you."
"I love you, too. But I know Tyler's trouble. You know he's nothing but trouble, too, and as long as he's around, I can't be with you."
"He's not around. We just ran into each other--"
"Kelly, this is hard enough without you lying to me. I'm sorry."
"Stay, please," I beg.
"We both know I can't."
He hangs up and I throw my phone against my bedroom wall as I sink down to the floor. Pulling my knees tight against my chest, I start crying.
I grab my phone and dial.
Ring.
Ring. Ring.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Hello," Tyler answers.
"Hi."
"Oh?"
"Yeah."
And in our own little way, he knows everything that's happened.
No one says anything on the phone for a solid two minutes. I think we're both weighing the good and bad factors in that moment of silence.
"Do you wanna come over?" He breaks the silence.
I think for ten seconds.
"Sure."
I shouldn't do this, I think, but push the ominous thought away and hit the end call button.
Time to call my friend, Derek, for a ride.
Ring.
Ring. Ring.
"Hey. What's up?"
"I need a ride to Tyler's."
"You and Luke broke up?"
"Yeah."
"Okay," he sighs, "I'll be over in twenty."
"Okay."
"Hope you don't regret this."
Me too.
