Prologue

17 years BEM (Before Entering the Maze

"Take care of them for me, ok?"

"Mum, please, don't let them take us."

"No. You must go. You'll be safe with these people, I promise. Just take care of them for me."

"I am not leaving You here, you'll end up like Daddy."

"Take care of the boys. Promise me."

"I am not letting you do this. Please don't leave me."

"Sir, it is time to go."

"I can't let you go through the Swipe. Please, I love you."

"Look, I have to."

"I have already lost everyone. I am not losing you as well."

"If I find you again, I will never remember you. So, I will say this now. I have, are and always will be with you."

"Sir, please we have to go. The doctors are waiting for you."

"No. Please. Let him go. No!"

5 months BEM

"Do we have to do this?" 

"It will give us nearly exactly the old blueprints."

"But all of the old creators have died." 

"Then we will just get new recruits. Anyway, we will need people to run this place while we are in there." 

"I wish I would never have to go in there." 

"Just remember this."

"What?"

"WICKED  is good."

3 minutes BEM

"Remember, no one has their memory in the Glade because they have all gone through the Swipe."

"Why don't you give me the Swipe?"

"Because you are a Variable. Your memory needs to be obtained so that you can make sure everything happens how it is supposed to."

"Will he be there?"

"Yes, but he won't remember you. I only have a few minutes to explain. You will be put in the Box with her, then you will enter the Glade. You can only remember your new name and that you must protect the girl you are sent up with. You two are the only girls in the Glade, so things will be difficult.
