Tomato soup and hot grilled cheese,
the comfort food of childhood,
Is not the same as I recall
but basically, it's still good
That plain Jane soup is now a bisque,
each recipe is different
Some are sweet, some savory,
and each has its adherents
The creamy rich tomato taste
is sometimes lost in spicing
Quite often one can tell how far
by looking at the pricing
The more it costs, the farther from
the memory of my tongue
Though true my palate has evolved
from when I was so young
Now let's get to the sandwich part,
the grilled cheese on the side
The Sunbeam bread, Velveeta cheese,
my mom would serve with pride:
Are not the current type at all,
as shown on cooking shows
Different breads and cheeses now,
drop careless of old toes
My pan, of late, has seen new breads
and cheeses of all kinds
Certain combinations suck
and others are great finds
Pumpernickel rye bread's good
with cheddar's sharper touch
Pepper Jack on cinnamon swirl,
REALLY not so much
Wheat's too sweet, Italian's fine
garlic French bread's great
Kraft American flavored slices
taste and melt first rate
O'er all our years, our tastes will change,
opening a world
Of flavor combinations
that slowly come unfurled
