Growing up, all I heard was stories about 'colours'. Every day my mother would come home, telling my father about how many of the people she looks after saw colours that day. Her herself never experiencing it, she was always bewildered by the way they described 'colours' to her.
I didn't know what they meant until recently.
The first thing you're taught in school is how to write, and how to read. The next thing you're taught is that when you're 12 years away from death, you see what others cannot see; 'colours'.
I smile everyday, continuing like nothing has happened, like i'm a regular 15 year old. I look around, staring off into the distance. I regularly visit the nursing home my mother works at, and I talk to the elderly women about colours, asking them what colour things are and how long they've been seeing colours. They never tell my mother, which is a relief.
And now i'm starting high school, at my second preference school; the first one rejected me.
And thats where my story begins.
