I was in school when it happened. We had heard rumors before, but that was all they were: Rumors. I mean, honestly, who would have believe that the dead would claw their way out of their graves?
Yeah, that’s right, I’m talking about Zombies. You may laugh, I know I did at first. But this is real.
I was in School when they first spotted them. Actually, it was a student that first saw them. A small nerd that sat near the window who spent most of his time daydreaming. About what, I don’t know. What do nerds daydream about?
They didn’t come in hoards, just three or four. The epidemic hadn’t gotten that out of hand yet. I was listening to the calming monotone of my teacher’s voice when Nerd Boy let out a yell.
“Oh my God! What is that?!”
The teacher stopped mid-sentence. Every eye in the classroom turned to stare at Nerd Boy. Nerd Boy was practically standing on his desk, pointing a shaking finger out the window. Almost simultaneously, students leapt out of their seats and gathered around the window to see, what exactly, had Nerd Boy calling out to God.
The kids closest to the window started gasping and a few screamed. I elbowed my way to the front of the mob and peered out the window. A small group of people shuffled towards the school. I didn’t see what the big deal was. It was just people. And, then, one of the people’s arms fell off. I heard several people scream again. I may have been one of them.
But the person who had lost his arm didn’t seem to notice. He just kept shuffling forward. It was then that I realized that the people weren’t really people. At least, not anymore. Their skin sagged and was peeling in some places. It was a sickly grayish color. Beneath the peeling skin, I could see bits of bone and muscle. Instead of bleeding, they oozed a white, milky substance.
“Everyone sit down!” The teacher ordered, trying to get the crowed of kids back to “learning”. Of course, no one listened to her. We all just watched as the zombies got closer to the school. Someone must have called the cops, because sirens screeched through the air and a op car pulled into the front of our school.
~Students and teachers, We have a situation. We ask at this time that you do not panic and stay away from any doors or windows.~ The principal’s voice suddenly boomed over the intercom. He may as well have been saying, “Duck and cover!” And, of coarse, we didn’t listen.
By now, our teacher had stopped trying to get us to get in our seats and had joined us with our noses pressed against the window.
We watched as the police officer got out of his car. He yelled something indistinguishable at the zombies. At the sound of the cop’s voice, the zombies turned and began to slowly shuffle towards him. The cop took a few steps back and pulled out his gun. He yelled something more and then fired. Every kid in the class held their breath. The bullet traveled through the air at lightning speed and hit the closest zombie. The Zombie staggered a bit, but then rightened and continued shuffling towards the cop.
The cop got a nervous look on his face and fired another shot. Then another. And another. The cop kept firing his gun and the zombies kept gaining ground. Why the fool didn’t turn around and get back in his car, I’ll never know. But by the time he figured out that his puny handgun wasn’t doing anything, it was too late.
The closest zombie grabbed the cop and bit into his shoulder. The cop screamed and writhed, trying to get away from the zombie’s death grip. The other zombies circled around, urged on by the cop’s screams and the spilled blood. They moved in and began taking bites out of the cop.
Screams filled the classroom. I shoved my way away from the window, my lunch threatening to make a reappearance. I ran out of the classroom and into the hallway. I could hear screams coming from other classrooms. Kids shoved as they tried to escape their rooms.
I was shoved hard from behind and stumbled, falling forward and hitting my head on a nearby open door. I saw a flash of light and I collapsed. I tried to get back up, but was quickly trampled back down by kids trying to escape.
“They’re in the building!” Someone screamed. “They’re in the-“
The voice was quickly cut off. Through the foggy confusion, I felt strong hands wrap themselves around my arms and pull me up. Stumbling, I was half-dragged by some mysterious person. “This way!” I heard the person call to someone else. I felt myself being shoved into a room, and then everything went black.
