Subject: Angela
Location: USA, Detroit, Michigan – The Ceiling Of A Public High School
Time: 6:40 AM
“Umm…. does anyone know where we are?”
“For the fifteenth time, No!”
“Why don’t you just admit that we’re lost?”
“We’re NOT lost! We…just don’t know where we are.”
“Admit it John, we’re lost.”
“Maybe we could ask for directions?”
“Yeah, great idea Kate. I’ll just ask this dust bunny over here. Hey, Mr. Dust Bunny, do you know the way out of this place? What was that? I can’t quite hear you…”
“John, stop talking to the dust bunnies.”
“Well, would you rather we ask one of the zombies? Maybe they’d tell us before they EAT OUR BRAINS OUT.”
“John, that’s enough.”
Needless to say, things were not going as planned. I think John may have taken a wrong turn at the air vent…. or was it the cooling system? Either way, we were lost. What was really creepy was that I could hear the zombies moving below us. Groaning and scratching around in a very zombie-like way. What was even scarier was the fact that I think they heard us too.
“Hey, I think I found it!” Abby called from up ahead. My heart soared at the thought of getting out of the school’s ceiling.
“Where are we Abby?” John asked.
“The Nurse’s office. We an grab medical supplies then head to the cafeteria.” Abby said.
“I think Abby makes a better leader than John.” Cody said. This last statement earned Cody a death-glare from John. Abby ignored the two feuding boys altogether and carefully removed one of the ceiling tiles. Peeking through the hole in the ceiling, she gave us the “All-clear” sign and dropped down. Kate went next, then Cody. I was second-to last. As I approached the hole, I was suddenly reminded of my fear of heights.
“Hey, guys. Umm…why don’t you go on ahead? I’ll keep lookout from up here.” I said hesitantly. A hand landed heavily on my shoulder and I jumped nearly a foot. I turned and saw John, a smirk plastered on his face.
“Come on, don’t chicken out now. Just close your eyes and do it.” He urged.
“You make it sound like I’m about to try smoking for the first time or something.” I replied. John laughed.
“The only difference is that smoking will kill you.” John replied.
You should know, dropout, now come on, we don’t have all day!” Cody called from beneath the ceiling tiles. John sighed.
“Here, if it makes you feel better, I’ll go first and I’ll catch you at the bottom.” John suggested. I nodded in agreement and watched as John disappeared through the ceiling. Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and slipped through the ceiling. There was a few seconds where my heart rose up in my chest and I couldn’t help but think, oh crap! But then strong arms wrapped around me, stopping my fall. Prying my eyes open, I saw John smirking at me.
“I always knew I’d catch an angel as she fell from heaven.” John mocked.
“Shut up, John, and help us pack this crap.” Cody called from his position in front of the medicine cabinet. John slowly released me and Abby walked up to me, holding out a backpack.
“It’s a good thing the lost-and-found is in the office.” She said.
“Aren’t the zombies going to be able to get in?” I asked. Abby shook her head.
“The doors are pretty heavy and lock from the inside. They were closed when the infestation started, so the zombies were locked out. Were relatively safe….for now.” Abby explained. I grabbed the bad and went to one of the medicine cabinets.
“Only pack stuff that is extremely necessary. We’re going to have to carry all this stuff and we don’t want any dead weight.” Abby ordered. I began shoveling in things that I thought were important. Gauze, penicillin, rubbing alcohol, hygiene products, etc. I was zipping up my stash when there was the crash of glass, followed by thousands of low moans.
“Sh*t, Abby, the windows!” John screamed.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t think they’d be able to break them!” Abby yelled back.
“Everyone to the ceiling!” Cody screamed.
Instantly, we leapt into action. Kate was the first one into the ceiling. Cody grabbed her around the waist and nearly threw her into the ceiling. Abby went next. Then it was my turn. John grabbed me around the waist, lifting me up. I grabbed onto the edge of the ceiling and hauled myself up. As soon as I was safe, I leaned down and held out my hand to the boys. The moaning continued to get closer.
“Come on!” I said urgently.
“Ladies first.” John said, motioning to Cody. Cody glared at him, but grabbed my hand. I helped haul him up. I then leaned back over for John. I could see the zombies now, their decaying flesh hanging loosely on their bones.
“John!” I screamed. John grabbed my hand and scrambled up. But at the last second, a decaying hand reached out and grabbed hold of John’s foot….
