Running, I slid around a corner. "Quick! Before we lose him!" Falling back into a shadowed corner, I thought, I'm not a boy, damnit! The police rode past me. Fancy horses don't do much good if you can't follow your target. I sighed, "I wouldn't do this if I could get a fucking job!" I put my bag over my shoulder and started walking towards my secret hide-out. I was greeted by my friend, Kynney. "Hey, May!" I shook my head, "Don't call me that!" I complained, "My name's Maple!" He laughed. "Yea, yea! Whatcha get this time?!" He acts like a little kid, I swear! My god, how is his IQ higher than 100!? Mine is only 102, but his is 150! Fuckin' shit, dude! Seriously, what the hell?! Anyway, we went inside the abandoned building. "I got some money, food, and drinks." I answered. "Well, see you at the meeting!" Before I could reply, he had slipped across the hall to go play with the kids running around in our building. One hugged him tightly and the other smiled and said a quick greeting. I smiled fondly, I loved this group and hoped we never split up. However, we would have to at some point. I shook my head. Sliding my bag to the floor in the hall, I slipped of my coat, too. I ran to my room across the hall to get ready for the meeting.
"As you all know, the government is planning on replacing this building with a park." I stated. Everyone nodded. "We can't protest, they'll know somethings up." "So, what should we do? All the other buildings are taken or destroyed already." My sister, Kindle, asked. "That is way we are gathered today. I want all of you to, as you go about your everyday business, look out for other buildings." Most everyone nodded. The others looked uncertain. "If you can't find anything by the 4th, we'll have to move cities." Everyone nodded this time. Kindle handed papers out, stating that would be the area they would scout.
"Maple," Kynney started, "are you sure moving would be possible with our big group?" My eyes narrowed, "Well, it's that or split up!" I glanced over at the two children that lived with us. "I don't want Jade and Colin(Coal-in) to go to an orphanage. They would get separated and wouldn't understand. I'm lucky Kindle and I got out together! I don't want them to go through that..." Kynney smiled solemnly. "I understand where your coming from." We walked down the corridor in a comfortable silence. "Thanks," I said, not looking at him, "for staying by my side before anyone else did." "Gee, Maple! Kindle was there, too!" He replied slightly quiet. "She's my sis, she had to be. She didn't want to go back, so she stayed." I replied bitterly. It's true, no one believed me, no one wanted me. Kindle was the one everybody wanted to adopt. I was just her sister who would never get adopted. She didn't want to leave without me, seeing as I was her older sister. Then Kynney came along... I sighed and went into my room, leaving Kynney out in the hall.
The next day went around about the same. I had been walking around at a town store, casually looking at certain things. Some ally of mine came up and attracted attention to themselves, while I got out smoothly. Simple things, trying to find valuable stuff, avoiding too much attention, yada, yada. When I finally got halfway towards our base, I heard, "There he is!" Then a 'get him!' I grumbled, "Not a boy, but..." I paused before yelling, "If you want to play, let's play!" I darted away, slinging my bag over my shoulder once again. 'I have to get them off my back and away from the base... Aha!' I smiled, turning towards the police. "Yo, over here!" I yelled, getting more attention than I had wanted. I turned back and continued running down the new alleyway. "Suicide Cove, as we like to call it." I said as the police came around the corner. "Most of my allies, ya know, the gangs, stay here." I noticed a few were getting nervous. "Oh, but no need to worry, with me around your safe..." Even with my back turned, I could see them shaking. "Unless I get hurt." I continued walking, occasionally hopping on top of something higher up. The leader was getting impatient, I could tell, as I just calmly walked around them in a circle. He obviously wasn't used to having a target who wasn't afraid of him. I guess I was, but not like the others(ya know, the wimps who turn themselves in). "Well, if your just gonna stand there..." I suddenly said as I jumped off a balcony, "I best be going!" I ran down the rest of the alley and went the round-about way to the base. They never did catch up.
