Sunlight poured in,momentarily blinding me. I closed my eyes and blinked. Soon,I could see again.

I heard laughing above me. It sounded like boys.bAlmost at once, shouting started.

“What do you see Newt?”

“Yeah,is he an ugly shank?”

Then,a new voice spoke. It’s accent was different,it was British.

“It’s-it’s a girl,”British voice answered.

Whispers started,then the shouting continued.

“Is she hot?”

“I call dibs!”

“She’d never want you shuckface!”

“How would a shank like you know?”

Someone shushed them, and only the sound of the wind remained.

I took this chance to look up. About twenty boys stood above me,all looking at me. One boy stood out to me.He was pale, and had dark brown hair, and had the same color eyes. He studied me intently. I stood up and looked the strange boys in their eyes.

“Will someone let me out?”I asked.

One boy let a rope down with a loop tied at the bottom.

“Step into it,and hold on tight,”British voice ordered.

I did as I was told, and soon arms were reaching over to me,trying to help me up.

Once on level ground,I stepped out of the loop. I looked around my environment. I appeared to be in some sort of giant field surrounded by four walls.

In the direction I was guessing was north, was a two story structure. I could tell the boys had built it because it looked about ready to fall apart.

Over in the east direction, was a barn. On the outside,in a pen, were some pigs and chickens.

Right against the west wall, was a forest, and next to that,a garden. The air smelled of a farm.

My eyes wandered until they reached a huge gap in the middle of the south wall. I started walking towards it,thinking it might be an exit. I didn’t realize I had started running until I almost tripped.

“We got a Runner!”a boy shouted.

When I reached the gap,I stopped. The corridor was long, maybe sixty feet before it split two ways. The walls were ivy covered like the other walls.bThere were puddles scattered here and there.bThe sunlight cast shadows on the cement of the corridor.

I felt a hand on my shoulders, and turned to see the brown haired boy.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,”he advised.

“Who are you?”I asked the strange boy.

“I’m Thomas,”the boy answered.

“Zoe,”I replied.

“So,why did you run over here?”Thomas asked me.

“I thought it was an exit,”I said.

“Well, then you were sadly mistaken,”Thomas laughed.

I glanced back at the opening. I saw two shadows moving towards us. Soon, two boys ran past us. One was Asian and the other had a pale complexion, although he was a little darker than me or Thomas. The Asian kid glanced at me for a second, but then looked away. The pale one didn’t even bother to look.

“I thought you said we weren’t supposed to go in there,”I accused Thomas.

“We aren’t,”he explained. "They’re Runners, they’re the only ones allowed in the Maze."

“Why not?”

“I don’t know why,I just got here yesterday,”

“And you just said ‘Runner’ and ‘Maze’,”I said."What exactly does that mean?”

“Runners are the ones who run the Maze trying to find a way out,”Thomas explained."And the Maze, well, you’re looking at it."

“Wait,you mean we’re trapped here?”I asked,horrified.

“Yeah,basically,”Thomas sighed.

“Hey,why can’t I remember anything?”I asked him.

“We don’t know, the Creators made this whole operation,”Thomas sounded angry when he said those words."Why don’t you come to the Glade with me and meet the rest of the Gladers.”

“Okay,”I sighed.

As we walked away,I looked back at the Maze. What could be so bad about a Maze?I had no idea how bad it really was.
