First tip: Orbs
By: Directioner_Gurl6
We'll start this book off with a classic: Orbs. Yeah, the for some reason dreaded word throughout the fanfiction world. What is so bad about this word? Let's investigate.
First off, what does the word orb even mean? According to google the definition of orb is-
noun: orb; plural noun: orbs
1.
•a spherical body; a globe.
synonyms: sphere, globe;
•A golden globe surmounted by a cross, forming part of the regalia of a monarch.
•"literary"
a celestial body.
I think you've seen enough definitions to get the point. So why are people calling eyes orbs? It sounds super weird and makes no sense. Just say it a couple times.
Orb.
Oooorrrrbbbbbbb.
Oooooooooorrrrrrrrrbbbbbb.
Ok, now let's talk about how it sounds in a story.
Example #1: "Harry, I think I might be in love with you." I bring my orbs up to stare into his glowing emerald orbs staring into mine.
"Lol that sucks cause I don't love you!" Harry laughs as his orbs absorb his entire body and disappear into nothing.
Ok, that last part probably wouldn't happen but you get the point. It sounds weird.
Now, to another topic as to why this is bad. You want your characters to be lifelike, you want them to be believable. Be honest, in real life would you say orbs? Would you look at some person and think "Oh damn look at his hot blue orbs mm." No, you wouldn't. I hope not at least.... With everyone complaining about orbs, just use the word eye. It shouldn't matter how much you use eye just don't use eye five times in the same sentence.
