What I Say:

I thought I was familiar
with the soldiers in Iraq
but just as dawn broke
I realized that the soldiers
who fight for my array of
freedoms rarely cross my mind

That was one of the saddest
moments that I've had to face,
after this realization I felt
crushed for a long time afterwards.
It was depressing to the point that
I'd rather just forget about it,

The pure active it of daily life
has overwhelmed me, my brain
churns like a busy day in NYC.
It was the most surreal moment.

I suppose it was no accident
that I realized I think of ...
The same everything.
The same everything
Same. Same. Same. Same.
Everyday. Everyday. Everyday. Everyday.
Night or day, same everything.

A voice called out to me
"Huh, me?" I asked life herself
"Yes, you" she replied.

"I have the biggest surprise for you,
life is bigger than just you. Humans
venture and wonder out on the highways
and through towns not looking at life
beyond themselves, they sit in their homes
and on the streets missing the inferno that is war" she said with rage.

I began to visualize a clear picture
of what war is, it's not a bit of a
struggle but it's like entering a
parallel universe, it was and is a
Different Lifetime.

What Soldiers Say:

They blast us. We blast them.
It's like this everyday.
This place consumes you.
I can't see straight.
Lack of sleep.

The most memorable scene:
In the middle of the night
watching the relief etched in their
young faces in the moonlight,
watching and hoping that we survive.

Every Night:
All the danger, all the hardships,
all the time away from home, all the honor,
all the frustrations with the fight here,
all are you outweighed by the desire for
young men to be a part of a band of brothers
who will die for one another. Man for man.

You can't buy experience.
These are amount the event and experiences
I'll remember best. Talk about courage and commitment. You just hope the bravest will survive. There are no truly happy moments here. Yet sunsets are spectacular. Something so simplistic provided so much Hope.

But we all think of Home.
Always thinking of Home.
Always thinking of Home.

What I Say:

I have witnessed my selfishness.
Not thinking of the ones who fight
for my freedom to be selfish. It has
opened my eyes and my heart.

I Promise, that I will continue to grow.
To grow into a man, an American man
who cares for his country and those
who fight for it from sea to shining sea.
