As the bell rang signalling the end of class and students filed out of the room, most likely grabbing some coffee at the local coffee shop before their next class, Lily stayed behind taking her time packing up her belongings. She still had to wait for Ian to show up, so she was in no rush to pack up. She picked up her journal and was going to put it in her bag, then remembered that she hadn't written in it at all today. Lily looks at the clock on the wall above Mr. Hallaway's desk and figured that she would he here for a while waiting. This is a big campus to navigate and Ian may get lost trying to find the classroom, so Lily sits back down and opens her journal up to the next blank page and starts writing down her thoughts of the day so far.
Lily's journal is her most prized possession. She never lets anyone read it, her thoughts are way too personal for people to read. She would be distraught and ashamed if anyone were to read what she has written. It's not a fancy journal, it doesn't have a pretty cover or gold trimming like you see most of the time. Lily is very simplistic, and her notebook is proof. The journal is actually just a notebook, spiral rings holding the pages together with a thin, blue cardboard cover. Lily has about 100 of these stacked up in her room in the dorm. She writes every day, multiple times a day most of the time, so the pages fill up quickly. Lily goes through up to three notebooks a month just writing down her thoughts and feelings. When Lily has writers block she draws on and in the notebook. The front cover is filled in with squiggles and odd shapes. Lily loves to doodle when she is bored in class and needs to pass the time. So the notebook is filled with squares and cirles, lines and scribbles, and of course her family picture. It has her brother, their mom and dad, and herself all standing together in the park near their house. This photo is the last photo taken with her whole family together so it means the world to Lily. Looking at the picture always reminds Lily of happier times, before everything went wrong and she became a freak.
Lily starts her journal off how she usually does, writing down the first though she has when she wakes up in the morning. Today she thought about what would happen if she could turn back the clock a year, back to that night. She wondered how different would her life be.
Lily's mind blocked out the rest of those thoughts, that was not something she wanted to think about and get in depth in at school. She started thinking about Ian and how he moved back from France. She wondered if Ian can speak French too. Lily always wanted to learn another language, she just never put in time to do it. Lily has a certain respect for people that can talk between two languages. She wondered if it was hard switching back and forth, especially in the same conversation or if it was second nature after a while. Lily wondered if Ian would teach her French, if he did speak it. She thought that would be awesome, then she can get to know Emma's brother and learn a new language.
Lily thought about what Ian is going to look like. Maybe he would be tan like his sister. France is usually cooler around September so maybe not too tan. September in California was always hot, which Lily loved. The University of California in Berkeley, CA was right where Lily wanted to be; it's an incredible campus and beautiful weather with great courses. Lily loved California, her brother Scott did also. Lily was so thankful Scott decided to come to UC with her, it has made things a lot easier.
Lily was curious to find out if Ian would be cute, not that it really mattered to her. If he is attractive, then more people would want to be around him, guys would want to be his friend and girls would be all over him. That meant more people, making Lily's anxiety go bonkers. Lily hoped she could keep calm and not panic if that happened, it would be embarrassing if she had an episode in front of the new kid. He'd probably book it out of there and never speak to her again. Maybe even run all the way back to France!
Lily is so enthralled in her writing that she doesn't hear the classroom door open. She is usually so in tune with her surroundings, so when she looks up and sees Mr. Hallaway standing in front of her seat she all but screams bloody murder. "Mr. Hallaway, you scared the day lights out of me," Lily exclaims! "My deepest apologies dear, I was just coming to inform you that Mr. Hunt has arrived," Mr. Hallaway states. Lily says back, "Oh, thank you. Where is he?" "I'm right here."
