As I got into the school, I was bombarded with the chaos, known as High School. I picked up my schedule from the office, like everyone else, and checked for my locker number.
426
Darn! That was all the way on the other end of the school! As Julie picked up her schedual, I silently prayed she got a locker near mine. Please please please! Let her locker be 425 or 427!
"287!" She finally said. DAMN.
This day just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it?
"Well, I guess I'll catch you later Juliet." I said. Julie simply waved before running off to find her locker neighbours. I sighed as I trudged down the hall, avoiding eye contact with anyone and everyone. I pushed the doors to the stairwell wide open, and dragged my feet across the floor. I made the occasional squeak, earning me some very dirty looks from other people. But, I just brushed them off. It's not like they should care what I do or say, right?
After an excrutiating journey, I finally reached my locker. I entered the combo before a large hand was slammed on my locker door. I jumped back, before realizing where I was.
Oh no.
"Hey guys look! It's the freak!" James Thomas yelled. Several of his friends, or minions as I like to call them, sauntered over and began to laugh. "What do you think you're doing here, freak?" I simply replied, "Opening my locker? What does it look like?" He leaned over me. "Trying to be the wise guy, huh? Don't act to smart nerd! You're gonna enter a huge world of pain if you don't do what we say, understand?" I didn't react to his comment.
I suddenly felt myself being yanked by my collar. "Ugh!" I felt my throat being grabbed as James lifted me off the ground and shoved me against the lockers. "I said, DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!" I tried grabbing his hand away from my neck, but I was too weak.
"Yes." I finally choked out. He laughed, victoriously, as he dropped me to the floor and walked off with his groupies. I coughed, hard, from nearly losing all oxygen. I glanced around at the people in the halls. They all looked away immediately.
What's wrong with you people?! I thought. I'm nearly being killed and they all just watch like it's some kind of floor show?! I scrambled to my feet as I resumed opening my locker, this time actually opening the door.
I shoved my bag inside and got my stuff for my morning classes, math, geography and gym.
I slammed my locker shut and began to walk down the hall, to the math room. I resumed my foot dragging, earning myself alot more grunts, eye rolls, looks, and more. I ignored all of them.
"Hey!" I suddenly heard. My books went flying out of my hands, dropping on the floor. I dropped to my knees, beginning to pick them up, as I saw 2 red heels click in front of me. I slowly looked up, only to see Brittany Mitchell, the most popular (and most mean), girl in school.
"Don't go dragging your feet like that! It gives me a headache! I must have yelled at you like, 8 times! What? You think you're too good for us? Too cool to answer us? Well, NEWS FLASH. YOU'RE NOT!"
I didn't dare make the same mistake as I did with James earlier. "Ok." I muttered. "Dork! Nerd! Loser! Freak!" They all spat as they clicked away down the halls. I picked up my books again, and rushed to class.
The morning was pretty much a blur after that. Just normal classes, being bullied in the halls, the usual. This is how it's always been, and how it always will be. During lunch, I looked around for Julie, but didn't see her anywhere.
Eventually, I gave up, and grabbed my lunch and walked out into the field, eating under a tree, where no one would see me. As I bit down on my sandwich, thoughts ran through my head, about Julie. Where could she be? Did something happen to her? Is she lost? I knew these questions were really stupid, but after she didn't show up for the ENTIRE lunch period, I began to doubt that they were wrong.
There was no time to check, though. I rushed to my locker, getting the usual hallways beats and punches. I ignored all of them as I ran to the lockers. I needed to get there before James and his friends! If I finished quick enough, and ran to class, I might just be able to avoid them!
Surprisingly, my plan worked! And my afternoon couldn't be going any better! I actually smiled once in class, getting a lot of confused looks from anyone who knew me. No, scratch that, anyone who thought they knew me.
But, like every great dream, it must come to an end.
It was during my English class, 5th period.
My English teacher muttered some assignment before reading his book, and ignoring the class. He seemed to not really care about anything. Yet, he scolded us always when homework wasn't don't. And by us, I mean ME. He would let everyone else off the hook. But, nope, not me. "Unfinished homework again Jennifer?" He said to me. I had just stopped responding to his constant pestering, and simply nodded yes. He sighed. "Well, you know what that means." He said as he handed me a shovel. I had to stay after school and clean the gum from under the desks.
You would be surprised at how much gum was under those desks! I'm pretty sure everyone adds a couple more when they hear that I have to clean them.
Then, the P.A System buzzed.
"Excuse me? Mr. Gregory?" "Yeah?" He announced. "I am going to need Jennifer to come down to the office here, with all her stuff. She will not be returning back to class today. "Alright. Jennifer, you know that means double gum duty tomorrow." I grabbed my things and left without another word.
What do they need me for? What have I done? Did I do something wrong? I rushed down to the office, after picking up my belongings from my locker.
"Um, hello?" I softly said. The lady sitting at the front desk didn't even look up from her computer. "What is it?" She questioned. "Um, I was just called down to the office? Jennifer?" She looked up now. "Ah, Jennifer. Please head into the principal's room.
I thanked her quietly and shuffled into the office. Mr. Briggs, the principal, sat at his desk, watching me as I walked in and sat down. "You wanted to see me, Mr. Briggs?"
"Yes, Jennifer. Please, put your stuff down. There is something we need to talk about." I slowly dropped my bag to the ground. "Um, ok." He placed his hands on the desk and looked me in the eye.
"Ok. Now, before I explain why you are here, I will need you to stay calm at all times, no loud noises and please don't begin to, how do the kids say it these days, freak out."
Well. by saying that, I'M TOTALLY FREAKING OUT! I mentally yelled. He looked me in the eye.
"Earlier today, around the time 5th period began, I got a call from your mother." Now I was paying attention. "She was calling from the hospital.
My heart missed a beat there.
"Wh-What?" He took a breath before beginning the next sentence.
"Your sister, is in the hospital."
My eyes nearly popped out of my head. "WHAT!?"
He gave me a look before continuing.
"Your sister is in the hospital because, she has Cancer."
And right then, right there, my whole world stopped.
