Vogel continued. "You and Ezra are taking this one! Me and Lia will buy you the time you need! As soon as the window presents itself take 'them' down alright!?
Now Herik looked back to face the greenest of the four. "Hay Ez!" he exclaimed.
"Yeah?!"
"You got this alright buddy!" That caught him off guard. In all the time he'd known Herik, which again wasn't very long; he had never once heard the man say anything remotely positive, only negative or vaguely neutral.
Maybe he was starting to warm up to him. Ezra's response was not verbal but he replied with a subtle nod, though he tried to hide the creaking smile spreading across his lips. Herik gave an encouraging smile of his own. "That's new" he thought. Usually his smiles were accompanied by a lustful gaze.
But of course that was always directed at beautiful civie women he'd seen while on his way through the local town settlement or district. Other than that he only ever smiled when sharing some sick joke that gave him his usual kick. Ezra shrugged off the internal dispute.
"Perhaps he's really getting used to us after all. "Hell . . . who knows really".
Preparing himself for the task at hand, Ezra removed his own hood, allowing his poney tailed red hair to fall to the nape of his neck. Droplets streamed down high cheekbones. Silvery gray eyes came into being as the shadowy veil was lifted so that now his own identity was revealed to the world. With that out of the way he focused on their current objective.
The team rode out into the clearing, the mud that so slowed their progress was soon replaced by wet grass. Though it was a welcome change in scenery from the constant flashes of large trees, the open area would prove itself more dangerous than the mud.
The wet grass had the potential to make their horses to lose their footing and cause accidents. The result could be a number of injuries for both animal and rider. But, as Ezra looked up from the terrain, he soon found out the wet grass was of a far less pressing concern.
Ahead of them two massive figures lumbered about, moving with sloth like intent. In the fading evening light only their silhouettes registered their presence to the four.
The giant hulking beasts were all too well known amongst the remnants of humanity's descendants. They were the reason mankind was now but a shadow of its former self. Besides the outside world's natural beauty, they were the reason why Ezra had even chosen to sign on with the Scouts.
He'd joined their ranks to fight them and put an end to their reign of terror once and for all. 'They', were his targets.
"Ezra, Herik, you know what to do! Get on it! Lia, its time! Keep your distance, we need to keep their eyes on us!" Vogel paused for a moment as they came within a hundred meters of the two giants. "Alright team!" He stretched out his right arm, the sign to disperse. "Let's get down to business!"
With that the squad broke up into two sub-teams. One would distract while the other attacked. It was a simple strategy really, but an effective one in life or death situations. Vogel and Lia set their course parallel to the tree line. That would put them right in front of the two targets.
On the other hand Ezra and Herik steered their course so as to access the giants' blind spots; behind them. They watched from a distance that was quickly closing as Lia and Vogel made their way over to the massive looming shadows.
The giants turned their way and moved sluggishly towards them. "Looks like that got their attention!" Herik shouted, turning to face Ezra.
"We're up next 'Ez!'. I'll go for the closest one! You take the second! We'll deploy one after the other alright"! Herik waited for his teammate's confirmation.
Ezra nodded "Let's get to work!"
