•••••PROLOGUE•••••

Slowly I ran my fingers over my shoulder blade, feeling for the swirls and intricate crest that now adorned my pale skin. I had been sitting here for hours, not moving except to run my hand along that same patch of skin, over and over, still not believing that it was real. I closed my eyes, it had to be at least three am and I was leaving for school tomorrow, but I couldn't sleep. The pain that wrenched me from my dreamless sleep had subsided, leaving me shaking from the shock of it all.

The all consuming darkness had been pierced with bright lights as pain lanced through my back. My blood was burning, and I bit down hard not willing to let myself scream. Then an unimaginable heat began in my shoulder, it felt like someone had branded me. In a sense they had.
