It is the day. Today. In the nation of Credo, all citizens 20 years of age will be sent to the Convicticur. It's a machine that gives the probability of the test taker's chance of becoming a murderer. If the test taker gets "Absolute" that means they have the greatest chance of becoming a murderer and are sent to an island to fend for themselves. Each year the group of Absolutes gets a new island. If the test taker gets "Highly Unlikely" they are the group with the least chance of committing a murder. Highly Unlikely people get to live their lives in freedom, bliss, and happiness.
The Emperor of Credo, Cleon has forced this practice. Cleon was only 16 when he rose to power because his father died, and has forced the Convicticur since. He is only 27 years old but, the first time the Convicticur was used it was every citizen over 20 and if you already committed crime, you were automatically set to go to the island. He believes a murder-free society is a better society. Sometimes, the Convicticur is inaccurate and murder still happens in Credo. Basically, if your a Highly Unlikely and commit crime you die a most brutal death. I was waiting in line for the Convicticur. I nervously stroked my medium length wavy hair. We waited anxiously in a single file line in a dark room with beat-up bricks and saw dust flying in out faces. My mother always used to tell me that the Absolutes are lucky Cleon doesn't just kill them, before she got killed for saying this in Credo Triangle. I always thought that if Cleon just killed the Absolutes and people who called him out, he would be breaking his own laws. He also got quite angry my mother called the Absolutes "lucky".
I vigorously picked my fingers. The boy in front of me was shaking in fear. The girl behind me, with flaming scarlet hair had a frown on her face but, otherwise was as cool as a cucumber. The boy in front of me was called on. I was next. A few minutes pass and the fearful boy comes out of the Convicticur with his eyes full of tears and is sent to the room when the newly made Absolutes stay until the Convicticur tests were completed. I would have never thought that boy would be sent into Absolute.
"Coco Carafella!" Euphoranor Lugos the test giver, head commander of the Convicticur, and the man who picks our future called out. He had salt and pepper hair, thick ugly glasses, and a clipboard that displays our names. My eyes widened and I stood there. The girl with the flaming scarlet hair tapped my shoulder.
"Huh!" I squeaked.
"You gotta get going sweetie," She said.
"Oh. Right!" I responded. I took small steps.
" Hurry up! We gotta keep it moving" Euphoranor Lugos barked. The door zoomed down into the floor as I entered the room and quickly came back up after I stepped over it. A young woman with dark skin and dark hair, who I assumed to be Euphoranor Lugos' assistant was standing behind a floating desk. The room itself was a pure shade of white. The woman motioned for me to sit down. A swivel stool was provided for me to sit down. There was a white desk and a woman stood behind had clear edges. I set my hands on top of the desk.
"Hello, Ms. Carafella. Today we shall put the Convicticur between your nostrils, your ears, and one on your forehead." Euphoranor Lugos explained. The assistant laid out the materials. The one for the nostrils was kind of like a claw, the ears looked like regular ear plugs, and the one for the forehead was like a suction cup.
"Lydia, will you please set the Convicticur?" Euphoranor Lugos asked the woman in front of me.
"It will be the honor of my life," Lydia answered. I started to wonder if it is tiresome to say that over and over and over. My heart started beating out my chest. Sweat trickled down my forehead. My nerves had never been of this caliber.
"It's okay dear. There's nothing to be afraid of." She attempted to console me but, it made me more nervous. She marched across the room and grabbed the Convicticur. She put the claw between my nostrils first. Then, the ear plugs and lastly, the suction cup.
"Close your eyes," Lydia added. I heard some strange noises and saw my life flash before my eyes.Seconds later, I felt Lydia take off the Convicticur. I opened my blue eyes.
"What do you presume Mr. Lugos?" Lydia questioned Euphoranor Lugos.
"Hmm. This is one of the hardest ones I have ever done," He whispered. He peered at a chart. Lydia gave me a look of concern.
"Sample of blood Ms. Carafella," he demanded. I stuck out my finger and Lydia stabbed it with a needle and handed the bloody needle to Euphoranor Lugos. He investigated and finally made a choice.
"Absolute," He proclaimed and shooed me out the door. I ran into the Absolute room with my hands covering my face as I was crying.
"Scarlet Iolana," I heard Euphoranor Lugos call for the girl behind me with the flaming red hair.
