Chapter 1 - Meet The Elements

5:00 PM

I sighed as I unlocked the door to the house. Another boring day at work. I work at the supermarket down the street and I hate it. I'd much rather be working as a lifeguard but I can't be around water or it will act weird. I stepped inside the house and immediately heard songs blasting from the many stereos we keep around the house. Iv heard the song, Fun House by Pink. Wow, that's a throwback.

"Hey Lauren!" Kayla yelled from the kitchen. Walking into the kitchen I sat my bag down on the counter, "Hey weirdo", I smiled back to Kayla. Kayla and I go way back. She and I met a long time ago in elementary school, way before we became aware to our powers. Kayla represents Fire, and it definitely suits her. She can be extremely dangerous when she's mad, one time she almost burnt down the house.
"Hey, where are Jada and Spence?" I asked taking a seat on a bar stool. "Spence is upstairs in her room. And Jada left an hour ago to get groceries", Kayla replied in between spoonfuls of ice cream. Laughing I replied,"Okay K.K," I said, K.K is the nickname we gave Kayla. "I'll go see what Spencer is doing." I replied getting up. "Alright", she said picking up her phone to check her messages. Walking upstairs I yelled, "Don't forget movie night is tonight!"

Jumping the last two steps of the stairs I turned left to head to Spence's room. Upstairs we have the four rooms and two bathrooms. To the left of the stairs is Spencers and my rooms on one wall plus a bathroom on the opposite wall. On the right is Kayla and Jada's rooms and the exact same layout just flipped. Opening Spencer's door I was greeted by her lizard staring at me.
"Lauren! Your home", she said smiling at me. She was sitting on the floor letting the family cat, Carl, crawl all over her. "Yeah", I responded sitting on the ground with Spence. The cat immediately came over to me and stuck his butt in the air. Cats. Spencer had always been the one to take care of the animals. She represents the element of Earth. Spence and I met through Jada, my other housemate. I'm not exactly sure when I met Spence but ever since iv known her all she does is pick flowers and cuddle cats.
"So how was work?" She asked. Frowning I spoke, "Horrible, this one dude asked if he could have something for free. Like, who does that? It's a store!" "You should quit. Go get a job by the water", she replied stroking Carl. "I wish I could, but you know how it is when I get too comfortable with water." I said thinking about the water. My element is, of course, Water. Iv always loved swimming in the water ever since I remember. It wasn't untill about 8th grade that I unlocked how to use my power. Now, swimming relieves my stress and makes me comfortable. But whenever I'm too comfortable the water starts to swirl and occasionally it will start to bubble.

"Laur Laur! K.K! Spencey!" Jada yelled from downstairs. She must be home from the store, I thought. "Ima go help Jada with the groceries", I said to Spence. She nodded as I got up. Leaving the room I tried to not look at the lizard. I bounded down the steps jumping the last two steps, I always do that, and ran out to Jada's car. "Hey Bae!" I yelled jumping on her back. I love it when she brings home food. "Haha! Hey Laur Laur!" She said through laughs. Jada has always been the easiest to get along with. She just goes with the flow. Which makes sense because her element is Air. She and I first met in second grade. We were inseparable then but a few years later we separated. One of the worst mistakes of my life. In 6th grade we reunited along with Kayla and Spence and have been best friends ever since. Grabbing the groceries from Jada's car I explained what happened at my work today. When I finished she said, "Why don't you get a job at the beach?!" "You know why!" I said with a sigh. "Yeah, but you know what to do and I'm sure that you won't use yours powers at the beach", she said as we sat the last bags on the counter. I started to put the stuff away when I was startled by Kayla's ringtone. I put my hand over my chest as I spoke, "Dude! That scared me!" "Ha!" Jada said, laughing, while putting groceries away.

6:30 PM

It was my night to cook and I stood over the stove, putting the vegetables into the broth. I sighed as I turned the stove up to the highest setting. It wasn't working.
"Hey, Spence why isn't this heating up? Didn't we replace it not that long ago?" I said, frustrated. "Yeah, we did. But it broke again", she said sitting on the floor petting Carl again. I groaned and held my hand over the pot. Squeezing my hand into a fist the water started the boil on my command and just like that the soup was done.
"DINNER!" I yelled to no one in particular. Not long after I heard footsteps running down the stairs. "I'll get the movies!" Kayla yelled. "I'll go get the sodas and popcorn from the garage!" Jada yelled, skipping off towards the garage. "Want me to get the couch setup?" Spence asked. "Sure! That'll be great", I said while pouring the soup into six bowls. We were going to have our two good friends Austin and Taylor over. Taylor and Kayla have been dating for over 6 years and I'm surprised we havnt heard wedding bells. As for Austin, we all know that Spencer and him have a thing but they havnt dated. Yet. Austin and Taylor are the ONLY (Not really) people on this entire planet that know about our powers. Looking out the kitchen window I noticed that Austin and Taylor pulled up. Running over the door I yelled, "THEIR HERE!" I slammed my nose into the door from running but proceeded to open the door. "HEY!!" I yelled running over to them. "Hey Lauren", Austin said engulfing me in a bear hug. "Hi", Taylor said, "Where's the food?" I smiled. "Inside. Let's go" I responded turning on my heel and racing them to the door. Austin won by a long shot. I was a last.

11:30 PM

Checking my phone I noticed it was 11:30. We had watched Pocahontas, which was Jada's pick, The Little Mermaid, my pick, 101 Dalmatians, Spencey's pick, and now we are watching the scene in Bolt where Bolt meet Mittens, his new cat companion. Bolt was Kayla's pick and I have no idea why. I popped a peice of popcorn in my mouth and looked around at our jumble of bodies. My legs were on top of Spencer, Jada was leaning on my shoulder with her feet on Austin's back, Austin was laying on the floor, Kayla had her head on Taylors stomach, and Spencer was laying across the rest of the couch. Spencer and Austin had fallen asleep during The Little Mermaid. And now only Kayla, Taylor, and me were awake. As carefully as I could I removed Jada's head from my shoulder and moved my legs off of Spence without waking them up. Walking up stairs I wondered why even though I have the weirdest group of friends we all fit together so nicely. I opened the door to my room, flopped down on my bed, and fell asleep.
