Chapter Sixteen: Not the Brightest Bulb.... or Maybe....
Rachel stopped smiling and Christopher and Trent were just staring at me in shock. I briefly wondered what Rachel was doing with these two without Chase.
"Hey, cousin Rachel," Trudy said, obviously not knowing that there was suddenly tension in the room.
"Hey, Trudy." Rachel kept glancing at me as she tried to give her little sick cousin her full attention.
"This is my buddy, Nix."
"We know." The three spoke in unison. Their eyes trailing over the IV and to the treatment in the bag hanging above me.
"Okay, girls, let's check on you." The nurse came in and I nearly let out a relieved sigh. Once I was free of the needle, I could get away from these people. However, my body wasn't as fast as normal because of the chemo. I stood too quickly and Christopher jumped forward to catch me. I didn't bother to look up at him.
"Why is it every time we meet, you end up in my arms?" His mouth was close to my ear and I tried not to shiver as his breath caressed my ear.
"You're too cheesy," I mumbled.
"Are we going to go down to the beach," Trudy asked excitedly. The older brother laughed, trying to divert the attention away from me, I suppose.
"Of course we are, Tru," Trent said, smiling down at her. They waited for the nurse to unhook Trudy from the IV and when she was ready to stand, Trudy took her brother's hand and walked out of the room. Rachel waited until the guys left to speak to me, much to my dismay.
"Well, well, it seems like someone has a little secret," she said with a smirk. It made me laugh. Did she honestly think I was scared she was going to out me on my cancer treatment? She was really dumber than I thought.
"And?"
"Wait until I-"
"Tell Chase? Out me about my cancer treatment. That will likely get me attention and sympathy. Is that really what you are going for? Because that seems like a moronic idea. You, on the other hand, have a huge secret that I would happily share with Chase if you screw with me, Rachel. Now, go and spend time with your cousin, she missed her family." I didn't bother to wait around for her to say anything in return. I slowly trudged out of the room and towards my room to sleep.
I was out like a light when my face hit the pillow.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Ringing. My ears were ringing, or was it an alarm? No, it was my cellphone. It had been three days since the confrontation with Rachel the She-beast and I hadn't heard a word from Chase which was good. I swung my arm out and tried to find my phone but ended up knocking it to the floor. I groaned and leaned out of bed to pick it up.
Lucca.
She wouldn't.
"Hello?" I mumbled, sleepily into the phone once it was answered.
"What the f-"
"Why are you always waking me up, guy?" I interrupted him.
"Why did Rachel see you when she went to see her cousin?"
"Who did what now?"
"You know what I'm talking about, Nix. Don't play dumb. Her cousin has cancer and is at a facility to get treatment for it. Now, why are you there?"
"You really need to ask?"
Silence.
"I'm calling Chase and telling him about you two. I'm sick of She-beast and her blurting stuff that isn't hers to tell. She had no right to tell you and I thought I made it clear to her to keep it between she and me. Bye, Lucca." I hung up without hearing anything from his end. Rachel had pushed my last button. Lucca was the last person I had wanted knowing about my cancer. I knew he would think I was dying and never leave me alone because of it. There was no getting rid of the information now, however, and there most certainly was no getting rid of Lucca now.
I typed out a message to Chase. Rachel is cheating on you with her ex. I stared at the message, not knowing whether to send it or not but I didn't like knowing this in the first place. Why did I have the luck to walk in on them? I sighed and backed out, the message automatically saving as a draft. I couldn't just blurt that out through a text but knowing me, it would eventually come out into the open.
The rest of my time at the clinic was fairly peaceful....well, until the last day.
