You're just like an angel

Your skin makes me cry

My mum was a nervous wreck.

“Honey, have you seen my lipstick?” She called from her bathroom from her room as I checked the lasagna in the over. We stopped on the way home to pick up frozen lasagna; it was actually pretty huge, and I was a huge fan of Italian food so we decided to choose this for dinner. Besides, it sure beat Mum’s cooking. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t seem to be able to focus on one thing at a time.

And I had no idea why she was asking me if I’ve seen her lipstick—I don’t even wear lipstick. “Uh, did you check in the top drawer?” I tried to speak loudly as I headed back to finish cutting the tomatoes for the salad. I already had the lettuce and onion ready, all I needed to cut was the tomatoes and some cheese.

“Oh—found it!” She updated with me before all was calm again. I dressed in very simple clothes; a tank top with a light hoodie on top and some denim shorts. I wasn’t going to go full-out for Harry, since I’ve already met the guy. But I suppose this was the official meeting, where my mum finally told me how much she was liked him.

But my mum has never been this nervous before for a date. Normally she was confident and ready to go.

“Sweetheart, did you take my mascara? I can’t find it.” She called again.

I didn’t know why she kept thinking I touched her things. I rarely even went into her bathroom, nonetheless her bedroom. I had my own bathroom next to my room with my own makeup and everything. Why would I go into her bathroom to steal her mascara when I already had my own?

“I never touched your mascara, Mum.”

“Do you have some I can borrow for tonight? I have no idea where mine went.”

I sighed before I dumped the sliced tomatoes in the salad, pausing to shake it all up and mix it together. I then covered it with a paper towel in case the flies started making the salad their target, and hurried to fetch her my mascara.

I could smell her heavy perfume as soon as I stepped into the bathroom, mixed with her hairspray. She had brought her hair up into a classic bun, leaving small strands of her brown hair to curl delicately around her face. Really, it looked awesome on her. She was even wearing a slim, brown dress with high heels on, and suddenly, I felt like I was really underdressing when I stood next to her. She had on her full foundation, giving her face a pastel look, and had on a good amount of blush to define her toned cheeks. I could see eye shadow over her eyes, and her deep red lipstick perfectly applied to her lips.

Compared to me, my mum looked so perfect, while I stood here…wearing a hoodie and denim shorts.

“You look cute,” My mum remarked, flashing me a grin and showing her bleached teeth when she briefly looked over me.

Cute.

I didn’t know if I should take that as a compliment or as an insult.

“You don’t have to be so nervous,” I told her as I leaned into the counter, seeing her hand slightly shaking as she carefully applied the mascara. “You like Harry, remember?”

“I know, I know. It’s just…” She sighed heavily when she accidentally swiped some mascara on her nose and scrambled for a makeup remover tissue, which was right next to me. I pulled one out for her and held it out; she took it hastily and wiped gingerly at the black spot, her eyes narrowed in concentration.
