I cursed under my breath while walking along the roadside. Turns out, Bonnie had borrowed a car that was less than equipped. Instead of calling a mechanic like any normal person, she insisted we walk forward to get the "full experience" of a road trip. I hope she didn't expect me to walk much further. I'm a vampire, not an Olympic athlete. The last sign of any civilization was back at the gas station. Boy did that little incident piss off Bonnie.
The way I see it is that it was a simple mistake and the guy would die soon anyway. She wouldn't stay mad, I knew her too well to even be fooled by her charade for even a second.
It was still dark along the road. Of course on the off chance a car would pass, why would they stop for us?
As if commanded by my thoughts, headlights appeared behind us. Bonnie stopped and faces the oncoming car.
"You're not seriously thinking about hitching a ride with this person are you?" I questioned.
"Why not?"
"Do you really think that's a good idea?" Even if you do, why would they stop for us? It's the middle of the night. "
"We are supernatural creatures, what's the worst that could happen?"
She had a point, but it wasn't us I was worried about. She stuck her thumb out in the cliché way as the vehicle approached. To my surprise, the vehicle screeched to a halt. Bonnie put on a sweet smile.
"Good evening sir. My husband and I were on our way to Mobile when our car broke down a few miles back."
"You don't say little lady. Mobile is a pretty good ways away from here, though." The man drawled out.
"We just need a ride to the nearest bus station."
"There's one right outside Montgomery, but even that's a good ways away."
"If you can't drive us, we understand." Her face fell a little.
"I suppose I could make the drive. I won't be getting much sleep tonight anyways."
"Oh thank you sir! Come on, Jake. This lovely man is going to take us." Seriously, Jake? That's all she could think of?
"Wonderful, Elena." The name slipped off my lips before I could stop it. Bonnie and I both stopped and looked at each other. I could not believe I just called her Elena. What was I thinking? I could see the pain register across Bonnie's face.
She stood there for a second before saying, "Get in, dear. It's a long drive." I slid in the truck. It was a squeeze to say the least. The man driving, me in the middle, and Bonnie squished against the door. I still could not believe I called her Elena.
"So where are you folks from?" The man interrupted my thoughts.
"Up north Virginia." Bonnie answered.
"You're a long way from home, what brings you down here?"
"Jake's aunt has fallen ill. We wanted to come see her one last time." Bonnie was so good at acting or lying, whichever it was.
"I sure am sorry to hear that. My wife died a couple years ago, it isn't easy losing a loved one."I scoffed, "You don't say." The tension between Bonnie and I thickened. I could practically feel her steaming. I could not wait for this ride to be over with.
"If we come upon a hotel or motel you could just drop is off there." Bonnie was definitely ready to be out of the truck as well.
"Are you folks sure?" The man seemed genuinely concerned.
"Yes. We are." I growled.
"We are really exhausted. A good night's sleep will do us some good." Bonnie chimed in.
"How will you folks get to the bus station?"
"I'm sure we can manage."
The man pulled into an old motel. The neon sign read Cozy Corner. I could already feel the bed bugs crawling on me. I sighed and got out of the truck.
"Thank you so much, sir. We appreciate it. Here's a little something." Bonnie pulled out a fifty and handed to the man. I didn't stay to watch the little exchange.
I checked into a room. It was dirty and definitely dark. There was a single bed with a dusty cover. I laid down and felt instant relief. It felt nice to just lay back. I heard Bonnie enter the room.
"Would it kill you to be polite just one time?"
"I don't know, probably."
"You are absolutely unbelievable Damon."
"I know right."
She sighed loudly. "This is going to be more difficult than I thought."
"Yeah well nobody asked you to take me on like a charity case. I was perfectly content with drinking my life away."
"Stop feeling sorry for yourself." That made me angry. Who did she think she was?
In a flash i had her pushed against the wall. "Don't you dare tell me how to feel, Bonnie Bennett. You have no idea how I feel." I spat.
"I miss her too, Damon. Stop taking it out on everyone who cares about you. You're being selfish."
"Selfish? You think I'm being selfish? You are alive. Elena is not. You are what's keeping me from having her back in my arms. You stupid witch." I knew I had gone too far.
Tears started falling down her face. Her eyes were down casted. I gently brushed my fingers across her cheek.
"I..I'm sorry." I pulled her chin to look at me. "I mean it, i am." Her eyes were such a beautiful mixture of green and brown.
"Save it." She pushed my arms away. "i need a shower."
I shook my head. Guilt ate me alive. Always. Always. Always. I laid back on the bed. My eyes closed. Soon I felt the bed dip as Bonnie climbed in. She must have thought I was a sleep because I heard her whisper,
"You arrogant asshole, I love you."
