I smile as I watch Elena dance in front of me. Twirling and smiling ear to ear. Her feet take on the pavement with ease. She holds her hand out to me and I take it. I pull her close to me. She laughs. This will be our last dance, but I want to enjoy it. We dance in the night.
"I love you Damon." She proclaims.
"I love you too."
Suddenly she's being ripped from my grasp.
"Damon!"
"Elena!"
I wake with a start. I hadn't even realized I had fallen asleep. Darkness is all I see out the car window.
"Are you alright?" Bonnie asked. She furrowed her brows together.
"Yeah. How long was I asleep?"
"A good three hours. Have you been sleeping lately?"
"Of course." Truth was, I hadn't slept for days. When I did sleep the nightmare played over and over in my mind.
Bonnie gave me a look that said she didn't believe what I said. Who could blame her?
A small gas station appeared through the darkness. Bonnie pulled the car in and to a pump.
"I'll pump the gas, can you go pay?" She asked.
"Sure. You got the cash?" She fumbled around in the backseat and presented me a wad of bills.
"That should cover it." I sighed and got out of the car. It felt amazing to stretch my legs after being in the car for almost a whole a day.
A bell clinked when I entered. It was a dimly lit place that felt dirty and grimy. An older man was at the counter.
"Evening!" He called out to me. He smiled through his moustached face.
"Hello. I need a fill up out there." I nodded towards the car and put some money on the counter. "Can you tell me where it is I am?"
"Birmingham, Alabama." His voice was twanged with a southern accent. He'd probably owned this station for thirty years or more. Probably had a wife and children. Probably had a house in the middle of nowhere. Probably was happy. All the things I would never have.
My mind zoned out. All I saw was Elena's face. Her smile. Before she was taken away from me I had the chance for those things. She had made me so happy. This man had everything, while I had to be miserable. Before I realized what I was doing, I reached across the counter and snapped his neck. I left a fifty on the top and walked out.
"Are you ready, Bon?" I climbed back into the car.
"Sure. I just need to make a quick stop at the ladies room." She walked into the station. Immediately she stormed back out.
I held my breath to wait for her reaction.
"What the actual hell, Damon? You killed the man? Why?" She yelled.
"Calm down, Bon. He was probably going to die any time now." I smirked.
"I cannot believe you." She got in the car and we sped away.
Once again, I was left in my thoughts.
