In January 2016, Lee Soo Man held SMTown: New Culture Technology 2016 at SM Coex Artium: he spoke about the strategy for the culture contents business under boy-group brand NCT (initialism of Neo Culture Technology), which will be debuting different teams based in different countries around the world. S.M Entertainment launched the two teasers of the project, The Origin and Synchronization of your Dreams, which includes five members of SMRookies: Taeyong, Hansol, Ten, Mark, and Jaehyun. A week later, the 3rd teaser was launched with the name The 7th Sense and includes SMRookies member Winwin.
On April 4, 2016 S.M. Entertainment revealed two teaser pictures for members Jaehyun and Mark. SM Entertainment also announced that they will be debuting NCT U, the first unit of NCT, with two digital singles on April 9 and April 10. On April 6, S.M. Entertainment announced that the first single "The 7th Sense"-recorded by Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun and Mark-would be released on April 9, 2016. The second single "Without You" was released on April 10, the Korean version recorded by Taeil, Doyoung, and Jaehyun, while the Chinese version was recorded by Taeil, Kun, Doyoung and Jaehyun. NCT U will officially debut on a V-app live broadcast on April 9 and 10, hosted by Super Junior-member Kim Heechul. Their first debut stage was in China at the Top Chinese Music Awards event held on April 9, which also included SMRookies-members Kun and Winwin. They will make their official debut stage in Korea at KBS Music Bank on April 15.
