Skarlet hardly got any sleep. She kept tossing and turning, worried about Ivy. As Skarlet was at her locker, Eddy popped up behind her with her book bag. He hugged Skarlet tight as he told her he was sorry. "How did it go with Austin?" Skarlet asked wanting to enlighten the mood.
"Pretty good. Sorta a thing now."
Skarlet smiled, happy to hear that something good came out of that night. Skarlet looked to the side of her and saw Aaron walking with Danny. Skarlet shoved Eddy her morning books and walked over to Danny. Aaron grabbed a hold of Skarlet and held her back, "Do you know what your friend did to my sister?"
"Funny, last time I checked you we're white."
"Get your hands off her," Lance said, gently pulling Skarlet away from Aaron. "You might as well have been in that room with him, raping her."
Aaron stepped up, put his face in Lance's, "You are going to be a hand full aren't you?"
"Damn straight," Lance said getting closer to Lance, towering over him.
Skarlet pulled Lance away as Aaron and Danny walked away.
"Did he hurt you?"
Skarlet shook her head, "No."
Lance nodded, "I'll see you in English class."
Skarlet grabbed her books from Eddy and walked into her first period class. Aaron sat across the room from Skarlet, which was pretty smart of him.
Skarlet's phone started going off before she entered her English class. Skarlet pulled her phone out and saw that Ivy was calling, "how are you holding up?"
"I'm alright. Still shaken up. How are you?"
"Wanting to rip Danny and Aaron apart, you?"
"I'm alright thanks to my sister. Thank you so much."
Skarlet smiled as she started to tear up. "I got to go," Skarlet said controlling her voice, "get some rest, I love you."
After Ivy said goodbye, Skarlet ended the call and walked into her classroom just as the bell rang. Lance turned around, "How is your friend holding up?"
"Ivy is OK...I guess," Skarlet answered, having no idea how Ivy is holding up.
"Thank you for your help. Is there anyway why I can repay you?"
Lance smiled, thinking about it. "Clean my car?"
Skarlet smiled, "I can do that."
Mr. Brooks stood up in the middle of the class with piles of the same books. He gave the front row enough books to take one and give them to the person behind until they reached the last person in the back row. Skarlet flipped the book over to read the back cover, to get an idea what the book would be about. Skarlet held her phone tightly in her hand while she listen to the teacher read a few paragraphs. I need to get out of this class, Skarlet thought leaning forward to look at the clock above the door. She rolled her eyes as it was no where close to the time this class ended. Skarlet's legs bounces up and down quietly under her desk as she grew impatient. "Are you alright?" Skarlet heard Lance whisper as he leaned back in his chair.
"I need to get out of here," Skarlet answered.
Lance nodded with a smile, looking as if he had something in mind.
The bell soon rang as Skarlet though it was never going to ring. Out of the classroom, Lance gently grabbed Skarlet's hand and guided her out one of the side doors of the school, towards his car. Skarlet smiled and got in, as Lance put his key into the ignition switch, turning the engine over and driving away from the school. Skarlet took a deep breath as she looked through the window. "You look hungry," Lance observed as she saw her hands shaking a bit.
"Are you buying?" Skarlet asked looking over with a smile.
"Yeah, I'm buying," Lance answered as he turned the corner.
Skarlet stuffed her face with some French fries in her hand as they were parked in the fast food restaurant with the music on low. "How are you liking this place so far?" Skarlet asked.
"Its alright, had an exciting, intense couple of days in my first week here. Meet some interesting people."
Skarlet smiled before taking a sip of her soda.
As they finished eating they started playing the question game to keep the boredom out and get to know each other a little bit better. Skarlet thought as she took a bite out of her Burger, "What is the longest relationship you ever had?"
Skarlet saw Lance face soften. He took a deep breath before spoke "Two years ago with this girl Jane," he answered with doleful smile.
Skarlet wondered what happened between them, but thought it would be too painful for him. "Can I ask what happened?"
"Another time," Lance said clearing his voice.
Skarlet nodded, understanding.
Lance turned on the engine and drove away from the parking lot. The drive to Skarlet's house was silent.
She glanced over to see Lance playing with a half of the heart around his neck.
Lance pulled up in front of Skarlet's house. She looked over at him and thanked him. She got her binder and her food bag and walked up to her front door. Skarlet looked out the window and saw Lance's head down on the steering wheel, his jet black hair falling into his eyes. He sat up and took a deep breath while wiping his face and drove off. Skarlet felt bad for making him remember something hurtful.
