CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Just Breathe

I was there when William had her name put on the big screen.  He did it on the second day of their tour.  The entire band joined together in dedicating Just Breathe to ‘the girl that died too young’.  They didn’t know her, merely knew one piece of her story.

I didn’t recognize the words.  I’d never actually seen her face so I guess I shouldn’t have expected myself to know her on sight, much less know her name, but after having her thoughts so intimately intertwined with mine, I held a feeling of worthlessness for having dismissed her so easily.

*July 5, 2013*

Emily ran her clammy palms down her thighs, smoothing the bottom of her dress.  Nervous excitement coursed through her as she glanced from the door back to the cell phone on her lap for the millionth time.  It had been almost two weeks since her boyfriend had been able to come see her and Emily was more than a little excited at the prospect of having him all to herself for the rest of the summer.  Shooting yet another look at the door, Emily tried to calm herself, but found the task nearly impossible.  The idea that Jacen not only could, but would walk through that door at any second, nearly took her breath away.

Just as anxious, Jacen rushed past the lobby, not bothering with the luggage still trapped in the trunk of his car.  The knowledge that Emily awaited him at the top was enough to set his heart pounding.  Taking the stairs two at a time, a smile climbed his features, one of pure joy and not often seen by the public of late.

The moment that door opened, the moment that their eyes met, it was far too late.  It had been far too long, they were far too ecstatic, too desperate for every piece of each other.  From the second his foot crossed that threshold both were too far gone.

*August 12, 2013*

When Jacen walked into James’s flat, he did so without knocking.  This was normal behavior, not just for Jacen’ rather eccentric personality, but for all of the bandmates; they were like brothers.  William stood at the island, casually sipping a beer and watching a Yankees baseball game out of the corner of his eye, the flatscreen still visible from the living room.  At Jacen’s entrance, Will barely gave a glance, nodding his head in recognition, before turning his eyes back to the game.  But, mentally, he smiled, counting down.

“William!” Will’s grin widened as he finally turned to his friend.

“One second early Jace.  Remember: four seconds.”

“It was not four; it was three. I remember! You distinctly said three.  I said that three was too predictable,” Jace insisted.

“No, that was you.  I thought three was perfect.”

“...That.  Is just not true,” he went on, before scolding William, mocking as he snatched the bottle from William’s fingers for a sip of the drink, “You know, Edwards, operation make-Matthew-think-we-can-read-minds is not going to work if you keep messing up every time we try to practice.  Really, it’s just getting pitiful, your lack of-” Jacen stopped mid sentence, freezing as his eyes focused on something behind William, before his entire expression seemed to automatically shut.  Confused, Will turned.  And immediately relaxed.
