Elizabeth Washington rode her black horse Patriot as she called him when he became hers down the road. She had just left her normal home of Mount Vernon where she lived with her uncle George Washington and his family to go visit her mother who lived in Setauket on Long Island with her new husband and family the Ashtons. Elizabeth's father Lawrence Washington had died a while ago and she missed him greatly. After he died her mother let her uncle take care of her as was her father and mother's wish and her mother moved to Setauket where she married Henry Ashton and became stepmother of three children, two boys and one girl.
Elizabeth was getting a good education from her uncle and enjoyed living with him. She made sure to come on trips like this to visit her mother as often as she could. Her uncle had gone to help the fight for independence from England. He became the head general of the Continental Army.

Elizabeth's heart lifted as she saw the small town in Long Island come into view. She urged Patriot into a trot and then a slow canter. As she got closer she noticed multiple Redcoats which she was aware of their presence from her mother's letters to her. Her mother chose to remain neutral until she became a Loyalist alongside her husband which Elizabeth had to accept. Elizabeth was a strong Patriot and was a supporter of American independence with her uncle.
Before she entered Setauket she veered off to the side in the direction of the Ashton household. As she arrived two of her mother's children came running up to her while she was still mounted on Patriot. One was the younger of the two boys whose name was Jonahs and was 8 years old. The other child was the girl who was 7 years old and whose name was Marie. A voice came from the house "Be careful. You know how Lizzy's horse can act."
"We know Thomas," Jonahs and Marie said in unison in reply.
The voice belonged to Thomas who was the oldest of the three children. He was the same age as Elizabeth at 18 years old. Thomas had long brown hair pulled back and tied by a black ribbon in a ponytail. Some people assumed both he and Elizabeth were siblings by blood and not by marriage because of their similar brown hair and brown eyes. Little Marie had wavy blonde hair and sky blue eyes and Jonahs had dark red hair with blue eyes that were slightly darker than Marie's.
Patriot jumped a little as the sudden intruders approached.
"It's alright Patriot. They are just Marie and Jonahs."
Thomas came and helped Elizabeth off of her mount and had one of the slaves that he respected to take Patriot to the stable. When Patriot jerked at the touch and was about to rear Elizabeth calmed him and Patriot willingly followed the slave boy to where he would be kept. "It's been a long time since I have seen you Lizzy. We've missed you. How have you been?" Thomas's eyes gleamed with curiosity.
"I have been well, thank you. And you?"
"I have been very well. Especially since I heard of your visit here."
Elizabeth smiled and they turned to see their mother and Elizabeth's stepfather. Their parents walked over to where Elizabeth and Thomas stood. Elizabeth's mother had her arm hooked around her husband's until they were close to them. "It has been such a long time my daughter,"she said embracing Elizabeth.
"Yes. Yes it has, mother,"Elizabeth replied smiling. They hugged for a while then pulled apart.
"How is your uncle and aunt?", mother asked.
"They are quite well. Uncle left a little bit before I left to return to his troops in the Continental Army."
"Ah. How are they doing?"
Then Elizabeth's stepfather butted in,"If you have payed any attention, Elizabeth, your stupid 'army' of rebels is being defeated time and time again by the king's soldiers. How does that make you feel? Choosing the wrong side?"
"I'll have you know that the Continental Army is not all untrained. For sure most aren't but they are all being trained by the likes of my Uncle General George Washington and the Prussian General Friedrich Wilhelm von Stueben."
"Well you certainly have a mouth that a lady never should have. Your father did a terrible job of raising you. Teaching you filthy military and leadership skills rather than focusing on ladylike items."
Elizabeth lunged at Henry Ashton so Thomas had to grab her. Yelling at Henry she said,"You have no right to talk about my father like that! He was an officer in the King's army and taught my uncle as well as me! He won battles! Unlike you he was an actual leader and not a coward!"
"You stupid-"
"Oh and by the way Mr.Ashton my mother taught me as well as my father the skills that a lady needs."
Elizabeth started to walk away before turning around and saying,"And by the way, Tory. You will never be my father or my stepfather."
Elizabeth walked away and Thomas followed until his father stopped him calling Elizabeth very disrespectful names. She looked over and saw her mother slap Henry Ashton and yell at him. Elizabeth felt guilty but she couldn't help it. Now she was just regretting supper with the Ashtons that would come this evening.
