I'm drug into a large white corridor. Caroline and father walk ahead of myself and the two guards who are dragging me along.
"Wait here until we are ready for you to join us." Caroline barks at me as her and father walk through a large set of doors at the far end of the corridor.
I have two rather large, bulky men on the sides of me and more clones of them around the room. I look around to try to see if I can piece together where i am. The place doesn't give much way. The walls are white. The floor is white granite tile. A few pieces of furniture, all white, go figure. I find the only thing in the room that isn't white, a portrait hanging on the wall to my left I look closely at it. A man, woman and three children. Wait a minute i recognize that family.
"They are ready for you now Lucy." the guard beside the far doors says. I walk slowly towards the doors. It feels like it takes days to get there. I finally walk into a extremely large room, it must take up most of the house. there is seven overly huge chairs placed around the room, each with a person in them, three women and four men. I continue slowly to the center of the room where my father and Caroline are standing.
"Where am I? Who are you? And what in the hell am I doing here?" I demand. All the heads look up so I can see their faces. "Holy shit." Before me is all of the most powerful people in the state. The governor, the DA, the chief of police, the most well known priest, the head judge at the court house, the head of the school board, and at the center of it all my fathers boss, the man in the picture in the corridor, Damien Cortez.
"Lucy, darling, it has been a long time hasn't it?" Mr. Cortez asks nonchalantly.
"Yes it has Mr. Cortez." i reply nodding. "But sir, what am i doing here?"
"You don't know what this is?" he asked looking surprisingly at me then at Caroline and father. I shake my head at him. "Why has she not been properly prepared for this David?"
"Well sir, there was-"
"I don't want to hear your excuses David!" Mr. Cortez snapped at my father. "What am i suppose to do? She has come of age and is so unprepared for what choice is about to be bestowed upon her."
"What choice? What is going on? Will someone talk to me dammit?" I say looking around at the room full of people who all avoid eye contact with me.
"You will watch your language when you are in the presence of the Elders." Snapped Caroline smacking me across the face.
"That's enough!" Boomed Cortez. "There will be none of that in here. Despite popular belief i run an abuse free family. "Now back to the matter at hand." he said surprisingly calm from the eruption that had just occurred only moments ago. Mr. Cortez stands and walks over to me. "Dear do you know anything about the Light and Dark?.
"Like day and night?' I said still unsure of what he and everyone else in the room is talking and whispering about.
He chuckles slightly, "No. That is a very good guess though."
"Can you please just tell me sir? I don't like being involved in something that I know noting about." I say wearily.
"My dear we wouldn't have the time to inform you of all the knowledge that you have not been properly taught." He says glaring at Caroline and Father, but then looking sympathetically at me.
"Well damn." I say wrinkling my nose a bit. "What am I suppose to do than? You say I have some 'big decision to make' but I have no clue what decision it is or what its about or anything." I say quite quickly.
"That I do not know Lucy, that I do not know." He says scanning the room for some sort of answer. "I would leave you to you're father and Caroline, but seeing as they have already neglected that duty once I will have to find some other suitable means for you."
"Could I like read about it in a book or something?" I ask teetering from foot to foot.
"Yes, you could but most historical books only cover one side or the other. They do not put both sides into perspective. That is why we," he says looking at the other six still seated behind him, "Usually prefer for the parents to explain this all."
"I believe I have an idea Damien." says one of the women from behind us. He walks over to her to speak so that the rest of it will not hear what is being said.
He nods his head, "That is truly a brilliant idea Cordelia. I do not know why I didn't think of that myself.' He walks back over and gently places his hand on my shoulder. "Lucy, you do remember the twins correct?" He says to me softly. I nod in response. Of course I remember them, Chelsea and Brody, they're the Golden Children around here, though neither of them deserve the title. Chelsea being the cliché stuck up, rich, gorgeous girl. And Brody the cliché super hot, all-star swimmer, that gets whatever girl he wants with a snap of his finger. "Well Cordelia had the brilliant idea of letting them prepare for the decision that lies before you." He smiles widely with satisfaction.
"Not that I'm grateful and all, but why The Twins?" I asked confused.
"Well simply because, Chelsea is has chosen the Dark and Brody has chosen the Light. So if you spend time with both of them, and they properly teach you about both sides, you will be able to make your decision." He says walking away. "Now, you're all dismissed."
I go to follow Caroline and Father, but Cortez stops me. "No Lucy, you wont be going back with them. You will be staying here, with my family."
"But sir," my dad is now speaking, "we haven't seen each other in nearly a year."
"And who's fault is that David?" Mr. Cortez barks at my father. "You are very lucky I do not have you taken to The Detention Center for this, both of you." He stares coldly at my father and step-mother. "Now, like I said, You. Are. Dismissed." They both put their tails between their legs and scamper out the door. A surprisingly calm feeling washes over me as I watch them leave.
"Thank God." I mumble under my breath.
