"Hey, Mari. I've got something for you." I heard a voice cut through the deep void of sleep. "C'mon, you'll love it." The voice promised.
"Hmmmm," I mumbled turning away from the voice, trying to fall back into my dreams.
"Mari, please?" It cooed, knowing my weaknesses. I felt warm fingertips run down my arm to my hand, where they settled.
"Okay, okay." I said turning back to the voice and opening my eyes.
"Good morning Sunshine." Jake smiled when my eyes met his deep blue ones.
"Hmmph," I snorted tilting my head to the side as he leaned down to kiss me. He momentarily looked hurt, but quickly recovered and kissed my cheek.
"What crawled into your ear and laid eggs?" He asked playfully, his smile returning tenfold.
"You." I replied shooting him a glare.
"Oh come now, I had to. If I hadn't my mother would've and you know how scary she can be"
"Oh, alright." I huffed reaching my arms around his shoulders, apologizing for ignoring his kiss.
"Come on, we gotta get ready."
"For what?" I asked pulling away to look questioningly into his eyes.
"Pack meeting." He replied with a hint of excitement. This sparked a suspicion in me, but I didn't ask, knowing it wasn't likely I would get a straight answer.
"'Kay," I submitted moving to get up from the plush, king size bed, but before I could, Jake pounced. Pushing me further into the velvet soft comforter as he lowered his face to mine. Our foreheads touched as we stared into each other's eyes.
"Jake," I started.
"Shh. . ." He whispered his lips lightly caressing mine. I smiled into the kiss, bringing my hand up to smooth my hand across his face.
Suddenly our alarm went off and I broke off the kiss, struggling under his weight to reach the snooze button.
He rolled off me to the other side of the bed so I could pound the button. "I admit, I would rather stay here with you, but I think something important is going to happen."
"Ugh," was my response as I sat up. I had a feeling that when I looked into the mirror I would see my hair tangled in knots with dark circles under my eyes. Sure enough, I looked into the bathroom mirror, my hair hectic and eyes dark. I decided a shower would help, for some time I felt tensed, like something bad was going to happen.
I came back out of the bathroom, "Jake," I sighed. "You should wake up Sissy, she's probably still asleep."
He walked over to me, wrapping his hands around my waist. "Okay," he smiled, leaning down to give me a peck on the lips.
I got into the shower and let the scorching water run down my back giving me goosebumps. Slowly, I could feel the tension being released from my body and mind.
A half hour later I stepped from the humid bathroom into the refreshing cool air of the bedroom. The smell of breakfast wafted up from downstairs and I could hear the rest of the pack starting to wake up.
I walked down the stairs and came to halt at the kitchen door, through it I could see Jake bouncing a giggling Sissy while simultaneously trying to flip the eggs he was cooking. I walked up next to him and lifted Sissy out of his arms to give him his other arm back.
"Thanks," he said looking over at me with a smile.
"What's going on? Everybody's up, that only happens once in a blue moon."
"Oh, we're having a pack meeting, very important. My dad requested the entire pack's presence."
"What's it about?" I asked pulling my necklace out of reach from Sissy.
"I'm pretty sure it's about the border issues we've been having with Blue Blood. They're getting antsy."
Blue Blood was our "rival" pack. We'd never gotten along ever since the "breeding" incident.
"Huh, I thought that was already settled?"
"It was, but they suddenly aren't happy with the terms."
"That's weird, I guess we'll know more about it at the meeting."
"Yeah," he sighed flipping the eggs onto a plate.
I grabbed the plate and walked over to where the bacon was being fried and snatched a piece from the pan.
"Hey, what'd you think you're doing?" Asked Buck, the official pack cook, he could turn wild dog into a gourmet dinner. Anybody who's ever had his food would call him a wizard.
"Grabbing something to eat." I replied retreating towards the fridge.
"More like stealing. Why don't you wait until I'm done?" He grumbled adding more bacon to replace what I took.
"Cause, I'm hungry." I said sitting a squirming Sissy in her toddler chair.
