It's a Monday morning and the sun has gone on holiday, it has been replaced with freezing cold breeze and snow clouds. Don't get me wrong I love winter, it's my second favourite season because autumn will always be my favourite. The cold just sucks. Snow is pretty but why can't snow be snow without the cold. It's my day off and I have a cold. I could be out with a friend doing something but instead, I'm inside, drinking hot choco with my cat. I have a feeling my cat, has become my best friend. That is extremely sad.
Mitten's climbs on my lap and begins to purr, a common sign that she either wants to be fed or needs attentions.
" Food and attention are what we both need, Mitten's. Come on, let's eat." I pick her up and carry her like a baby towards the kitchen. Her big green eyes looking up at me telling me things I already know. Her permanent smile is like she's achieved such a great reward for being cute and trust me, it gets me every time.
Suddenly there was a knock at my door. I put Mittens down, ignoring the cries as I neglected her once again. I'm not expecting anyone, who could be knocking in such horrid weather? I shuffled towards the door and grabbed my blanket on the way, wrapping myself up like a burrito to protect from the outside temperatures. Through the spy hole, I could see a young girl with blonde hair and a blue coat on. She was holding a book of some sort. I will not sign up to any more charity funds and I am not converting to any religious other than the religion of ice cream. Praise the cookie dough.
I slowly opened the door and she gleamed up at me with her innocent, untamed eyes. She did not say a word just looked at me with such passion and fulfillment. I had to make the first move.
" I don't sign up to any more charity funds and I will not convert religion, I ..."
" I believe in Satan." How did she know what I was about to say? She probably heard about me because everyone knows me as the crazy, satan loving, weirdo. Just to clear up, I don't love satan, I just say that to get the religious people away.
" So what do you want? Are you selling something?"
" I'm here to help you. But first, I've walked a long way to get here. Can I trouble you for a glass of water?"
" I don't know who you are? Why would I let you in my house."
" Because you're kind. I don't have any money for a drink at the store and I'm here to see you anyway. If you let me come in, I can explain everything."
" Fine. Don't steal anything and don't touch my cat. She doesn't like strangers."
" I know." I looked at her for a second, wondering if I knew her. She seems to know so much about me without an ounce of information given. She skips in and heads straight to my living room as if she already knows the way while I head to the kitchen to get her some water. I quickly remember about Mittens and finish off her food while I'm in there. Not long after, I return with a glass of water and a plate of biscuits. I don't normally share my biscuits but hey ho, there is guests.
Her eyes light up as she sees the bourbons. " Thank you! They're my favourite."
" They're my favourite too. What was your name again?"
" I know. I didn't say, my name is Katalina." She giggles and takes a bite.
" Why do you keep saying that? How do you know?"
" I'm not from this time." She says through a mouthful of bourbons.
" What do you mean?"
" You ask so many questions. I'm just going to explain it all and you can ask after. Don't interrupt of I won't finish in time."
" Fine..."
She smiles and takes another bite before continuing. " Okay, so I'm from a few years in the future and I've come back to see you." She holds her hand up sensing my burning question. " In the future, your story has been written up and people all over have read it. You're famous in my time. However, something happens to you that is terrible. Which leads me to why I'm here. I'm here to stop that terrible thing from happening so you can have a longer life. Now, speak."
" Okay for a start, you are quite rude. Now, how far in the future? I'm famous. What happened that is so terrible? And last. How are you going to change something that has already happened?" I sit out of breath and bewildered, waiting for my answers.
" I am quite open, yes. I'm from 2304. You are famous because of your tragedy. Just like people in your history books. Anne Frank for example. It's just, you're known because it's upsetting and people pray for your soul. There is a special day to remember you. You saved the wall from breaking. The wall between human and nonhuman. I can't go into much detail about that right now but later. I'll explain later. I hope to and I repeat hope, to stop the person who killed you."
" Well, that doesn't sound too hard."
" There is one little thing I'm leaving out."
" Just tell me, it can't get any weirder."
" It's not weird. It's a complication. So, everyone knows that you can't mess with time. If you do something happens and something changes. However, we need to mess with it in order to save you. Meaning, I don't know what could happen."
" Then leave it be."
" I can't sit here and not do anything. Knowing I can do something and let you live. You didn't have to die, you could still help us and live. Maybe become our leader."
" I didn't ask you to save me. Just leave it be."
" I won't. Your life is worth so much more than you think and your death made the world stop."
" I am one person. Not that important. Just let me save you and then die. It's more fitting to die after being a hero."
" I'm going to stop it no matter what you say. I can't just let you die."
" Me dying isn't that bad."
" It is if you're a relative. You mean so much to me and just being here to meet you is amazing. I am only alive because of your brother, I'm from his bloodline. Your bloodline stopped at you. You didn't get to have the family and life you deserve."
" I'm fine with my cat."
" My granddad said you were stubborn. I didn't expect you to be this bad."
" I'd have much preferred to open the door to a bunch of bible bashers than you. You've ruined my evening. I'd like you to leave now."
She sighs in defeat, giving up any hope of success. I felt bad for her coming all this way to see me but I wasn't about to dive head first into a battle I didn't know anything about. Katalina should be the one to save the wall, not me. I know nothing about any walls. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a non human. Katalina gets up and begins to head for the door. She turns before leaving.
" You know, I grew up with stories about you. The great Sophia Jones, the one that saved us all. They sing about you. You know nothing of what you are capable of and what you have done."
" I haven't done anything. Fate changes all the time."
" This is not fate. If you want to see me again, just call my name and I'll hear." She opens the doors and leaves. I can hear the tiny crunch of the winter snow as she walks away with her heart on her sleeve.
