Twelve Years Ago

"Hey, sis!" I yell after Tessa. "Wait!"

She turns around with a small smile on her face, but I knew it was fake. I wasn't dumb. I loved her but I knew that she was exasperated with me as soon as I saw the rest of her friends stop and cross their arms over their chests and stare at me with one eyebrow raised. My chest heaves up and down as I stop in front of her.

"Where are you going?" I ask her. She smiles as she walks up to me and ruffles my hair.

"Your worried about us?" She asks us teasingly. "Didn't dad tell you to stay in your room? We're only going to the river, you should go inside."

"But, I want to go with you!" I exclaim to her. Father never let me leave the house, let alone my room. I was always locked inside with only books for me to read. He thought that I didn't notice these things but he should know that I'm smarter than that.

"I don't think that's a good idea, Luce,"

"But, Tes–"

I hear a vicious growl behind me. Something scary, but I've heard it too many times to be frightened. I still felt a cold chill run down my back as I turned around and stared at the dark, black, rage-filled eyes of my father.

Then, all I saw was black.
