"Princess Islani! Wake up" a voice whispered in my ear tickling it to life.
"Nooooo....." I mumbled into my pillow, my body was already tingling telling me I needed to move and get up, but my brain and I thought otherwise.
"You can make it one day can't you? One day until you can sleep to your hearts content" the voice replied back shaking my shoulder.
I eventually rolled over and blinked my eyes slowly to be face to face to Olindia, my maid/ babysitter/ best friend/ only friend. "What's planned for today then, any backbreaking, nail crushing work?" I whispered back to her while staring at her pale blue eyes.
She smirked and backed away to grab my list of 'chores' or to-do list, allowing me to sit up and stretch my arms and legs out. I then plopped my feet onto the floor, very unprincess like if you ask me. Olindia raised her eyebrows like usual when she saw I didn't use my manners, she then began her morning pace in my room.
"Okay, so first we have manners mistress," I internally groaned, not again. "Then we have writing mistress for a half hour, small change" she waved her hand, I actually like writing lessons though with Madame Cirri. "Along that is a half hour session with your mother which is subject to change," oh this is interesting, I wonder what this could be about. "Oh and then we have luncheon," favorite part of the day..." with your visiting cousin Leon," and my favorite part of the day is ruined "shortly after is your evening ride, dance lessons, sewing and embroidery session, blah blah... then dinner, oh this is also new, a walk with your father before bed" she finished wrapping up the scroll.
"Oh so Leon is here?" I asked in which she nodded "then I'll definitely have some backbreaking work" I smirked and stood off my bed resting my feet on the warm carpet, leaving my maid almost in a fit of chuckles and giggles from my comments.
"He isn't that bad" she said mid-giggle.
"Yes it is, or do you not remember that he is the one who tripped me onto a string which caused horse dung to fling upon me and my new tailored 11th birthday gown when we were younger?" I raised my voice and strutted off to the bathroom, it just made Olindia laugh more.
"I remember that, the trail of horse poo was your perfume for weeks" she waved a hand in front of her nose "it was terrible having to clean you up" she then got me undressed and let me hop into the bath. "But seriously, life is tough and so are you, so live with it" she said as she rubbed shampoo into my long brown hair.
Olindia has been my maid since I was 3, she is like the mother I never had, but she is also the woman who I could tell anything to about, and wouldn't think I was some spoiled brat. But there were times when she got too personal with me, and I'd have to remind her who she was speaking to.
Her facial features showed she was older and more in her mid 40's, she had raven black hair with frays of gray amiss her head of hair, she had wrinkles in her eyeline and soft plushy hands. One of her most striking features that I most loved about her was her eyes, pale blue, like the sea after a rigorous storm. I think I only commented on them once when I was younger before I became mature and learned the value of time.
She was such an elderly woman and loved by everyone in the palace except my mother, no one knows why either, but Olindia always tended to her work, while also giving smart and wise remarks to anyone else she liked or disliked.
If I remember correctly, Olindia has two sons, and four girls without a husband, who supposedly left her at young age with a shack at the edge of the palace near the forest side to fend for herself. I've never met her children, never asked about her children, although she talks about them all the time (I zone out most of the time) and never shuts up about them unless she is in serious work. I honestly don't give a damn if they made a funny joke at the dinner table, I don't live with her, nor would I want to.I soaked in the warm bath with perfumes and salts of all kinds, leaving the fragrance of vanilla, my favorite scent. I quickly was finished with my soak, and was dried off in minutes before stepping into this light lavender and pastel dress, which sadly was tightened at the back when we reached the corset piece. My hair was fixed into intricate braids resembling something of fish scales and then was plaited around the back of my head so the golden and silver tiara I was forced to wear could sit atop my head elegantly. I stepped into my tiny silver heels and plopped down in a chair afront a mirror so Olindia could lighten my face and pamper it until it looked beautiful with makeup.
As soon as she was finished I rose up and went to the door without so much as a goodbye and leaving her to do her job and clean up after me.
I had Madame Douponté like usual for manners lesssons. The droning, adamant, stocky, and just plain annoying 'lady'. Always saying how awful and unperfect my manners were, just for an inch off of a curtsy. Always strict to a point with that old bat.
Actually, when I wanted to be, I have impeccable manners, better than anyone you've ever met, even Madame Douponté. I only choose not to mention her mistakes in teaching me, for one reason, and one reason only. My parents. Always getting up in my business when I make a tiny mistake, and then not giving a care if I make a huge achievement. Definitely parents worth having right? Pfft
After three hours (how did I survive?) of etiquette lesson I went down the halls ,giving no less than a nod to the guards once, to Madame Cirri's classroom. She was always set with a book in hand when I came into the room, nor did it matter if I was late, I would always see her with her nose in a book. "Ahem" I coughed loudly so she could hear. She glanced up and set her feet down on the floor that had rested on the desk a moment ago.
"Hello your majesty, how are you today?" She asked in a sing-song voice like usual. And like usual I rolled my eyes and ignored her. She was a young woman, very beautiful (of course not as gorgeous as me) and in her mid 20's or so, but a lot of the guards caught her eye and she was a big flirt, also known as a bookworm of sorts. She was most definitely Mother's favorite teacher for me, and though I love to write, even have a passion for it, I could care less about her pathetic love life and words of 'wisdom', they can all go in a trash bin for all I care.
"Okay let's get started..." she ignored my annoyance and continued on with our nice time together. And from there was the usual, conviscating my time and tearing my dream of sweet freedom. Totally worth being a princess right? Wrong! I'd give anything to be able to give up being a princess for one hour if it meant I didn't have to wear these constricting dresses, listen to the droning of a teacher, or see my parents anytime soon. But some wishes should stay wishes and not come true...
