Once a upon a time in the magical land of Equestria, there was a king named Thunderhooves who ruled a large and mighty kingdom. And yet, he was sad, for he was growing old, and had no foal to inherit the throne. A pony nurse came running to the king with a baby foal wrapped in a pink blanket. Then happily, a daughter was born...a princess. And she was given the name Fluttershy. Thunderhooves then held his daughter with love and care, and went to the balcony to show his daughter to his pony subjects who cheered with joy. Kings and queens came from all around to offer their gifts to the foal. Among them was the widow Princess Celestia, and her young son Prince Butterscotch. He looked down at the young infant filly princess, smiled, and gave her a golden necklace with a pink gem in the shape of a butterfly on it. It was then that Thunderhooves and Celestia happened upon the same idea. Butterscotch and Fluttershy would be brought together each summer in hopes that they will fall in love, and join their kingdoms forever. But unknown to all was another plan, that of the evil enchanter, and spirit of chaos, Discord. Fluttershy's birth was of little concern to him, for he was preparing to take Thunderhooves's kingdom by means of the forbidden arts and dark magic. Discord the conjoured a picture of Thunderhooves and his newborn daughter, and then conjoured a picture of The Great Sombra. But on the eve of his assult, Thunderhooves attacked and Discord's powers were plunged into darkness. Thunderhooves and his pony soldiers then trashed the place, and destroyed everyone of Discord's spell books. Discord and his student Twilight Sparkle were then backed into the corner with no chance of escape.

Despite calls for his death, the enchanter was only banished. Discord broke out of his handcuffs in anger, turned to Thunderhooves and said "I'm not finished with you yet, Thunderhooves. Someday I will get my power back, and when I do, everything you own and love will be mine!" Thunderhooves just made a glare that said "GET OUT AND DON'T COME BACK!", and pointed out the direction that he wanted Discord to go, and Discord went that direction. Many feared King Thunderhooves too kind. But in time, the threat was forgotten, and all hopes turned to that not too distant summer, when Butterscotch and Fluttershy would meet. And that's where our story begins.
