Chapter 1

“For the last time, that thing won’t glow if you sing.” I sighed, pointing at the quarter-note shaped necklace I gave on her birthday. By now, I should most probably be used to these weird conversations with Charlotte. And yet, after the thirteen years we’ve spent together, (pretty much ever since I was taught that not everything in this world is edible) she still never ceases to amaze me with her bizarre way of thinking.
The obsession that she’s sporting as of the moment is Anime, you know, those Naruto stuff and all. And every time she watches, she twists and twirls around the bed, kicking the air with her feet and screaming their names like some psycho. To make matters worse, my gut feeling is telling me that this will take a long time before it mellows down.
It’s not that I have a thing against an Anime and stuff, but knowing Charlotte, there’s an actual possibility that she would fall in love a guy in the anime she watches. This means, I might actually lose to a person who isn’t even real!
I sighed again. And here I was, thinking that maybe after her K-pop addiction I could have a little rest from all the squealing and screaming. What was the name of that Korean boy band again? Oh right, Super Junior. Rubbing my neck out of annoyance, I looked down at our feet to direct my attention elsewhere. Huh, even our steps are synchronized. I thought, feeling my lips curve slightly upward.
I looked back at her, instinctively reaching out to touch her soft chocolate brown curls, but dropping it afterwards, realizing what I was going to do. You make me crazy Charles. I felt my cheeks turn warm.
As you can see, I’m an idiot who fell for my best friend. If you gave me a dollar for every time I’ve heard that from her cliché romance stories, I’d be friggin’ loaded. She abruptly stopped in her tracks, looking at me disbelievingly. “What do you mean?” she questioned, furrowing her arched eyebrows.
Stumbling back because of her sudden stop, I snapped out of my thoughts. And I just had to stare at her like some deranged pervert. I thought, mentally slapping myself. Regaining my composure, I gave her an ‘obviously-that’s-not-possible-you-idiot’ face.
Her expression fell, making her side-swept bangs fall and slightly covered her left eye. “But it did happen in Shugo Chara.” she muttered under her breath, thinking I wouldn’t hear it. “Hon, that’s an anime. It’s not real.” I said, emphasizing the word ‘hon’.
She absolutely hates being called pet names. And the last time another brave soul did that, let’s just say he wasn’t able to create ‘little butthead juniors’ as Charlotte would call it. But hey, she can’t hate me for doing that. After all, we’re like the best of friends. Of course she won’t just end our friendship just because of that little comment.
Right?
Wrong. But maybe after a few punches, she’d still befriend me.
She blushed furiously and threw a punch at me which I effortlessly stopped with my hand. Yes, Charlotte was strong, but not as strong as me. I smirked inwardly, knowing that all my hard work had pay off. Guess who took judo and karate just to protect the girl he loves. I adjusted my grip on her hand, and then yanked her dangerously close to me.
My tall 5”10 frame loomed over her petite little figure, for she was somewhat in between 5”3 to 5”4. Guess who also drank milk every single night. Though I was practically hovering above her, she didn’t even bat an eyelash. Not a single tinge of worry in her chocolate brown orbs with tiny specks of hazel that sort of shimmere… wait what?
