" Mia!!" I hear Taylor yell from across the parking lot.
"Coming Taylor!" I jog over to Taylor's black convertible and slide in the passenger door. Taylor taps the dashboard of her expensive car excitedly before clapping. Taylor comes from a rich family, but that doesn't make her snooty. She's super sweet with her head in the clouds, but she can be down to Earth when she needs to. "What's up?" I push the knob on her radio for music and buckle into the passenger seat.
"Did you see the new guy?! He's so cute! Not cute like large and muscular, but more rugged cute!" Taylor's excited chatter is almost incomprehensible, but after 7 years of being her friend, I'm used to it.
"I met a new guy in Bio today, so that might be who you are talking about. His name is Jason Park. He's my year end project partner." I glance up at Taylor to see her mouth agape. I know this look. I duck as Taylor's arms reach out to grab my shoulders and cover my head. "Please don't hit me!!"
"Fine." Taylor retracts her arms with a huff and glares at me. " How do you know all of that before me?! I'm the girl everyone goes to for information!" Whining Taylor is definitely not my favorite Taylor.
"If you want to meet him, he's going to be meeting me at the barn around 4." Taylor doesn't answer and begins backing her car out of the student parking lot. "Oh boy."
"What?" Taylor glances left to right before continuing out of her parking spot.
"Stacey." The school's queen bee waltzed through the parking lot with her 'squad'. The group of girls giggled and chattered, walking right behind cars as they were backing out.
"Ugh." Taylor stopped backing out and waited for the girls to pass. Unfortunately, they didn't pass us by.
"So, Mia. I heard you're the new champion of something horse related." Stacey sidled up to the convertible and glanced at her perfectly manicured nails as she spoke in a form of annoyance.
"Yeah, I am. Regional Freestyle Dressage Champion." Stacey leaned on the door of Taylor's convertible and continued.
"Yeah, whatever. I want to be a horse champion. How do I do that?" Stacey was paying no attention to me, but focusing on her nails. "You know, so I can look super good on my model application."
"Stacey, I've been riding dressage for 5 years, and this is my first championship. It would take a lot of practice." I whispered the next part so Stacey and Taylor were the only ones that could hear. "You would have to get muscles." Stacey laughed and stood back up. I'd expected a horrified face after I said that.
"Meet me at Yogi's FroYo tomorrow after school. We'll talk more there. Bye!!" Stacey walked off with her minions, leaving Taylor and I both speechless.
"Well, looks like Bailey has a new recruit. Great play with the muscles, though." Taylor was now driving out of the parking lot towards Elite Stables, or Bailey's. "So, Jason what's-his-name is going to be here? That's the only reason I'm coming you know!"
I laughed before reminding Taylor that we used to always ride to the barn together after school. "His name is Jason Park, and yes he should be at the barn." Taylor's convertible has the roof up, but since it's a sunny day, I pressed the button for it to roll back. The wind began to pull out tendrils of my bun, which had remained intact from the show. Well, we did put 2 cans of hairspray on this one bun. So, I guess maybe I should start wearing buns to school after shows. My bun eventually found its way out of the rubber bands and tumbled down my back. I snatched my brush from my gym bag and ripped it through the still stiff hair until it was softer. I put the messy brown hair into a low ponytail as Taylor pulled into Bailey's drive and stuffed the brush into my bag. Before Taylor had even fully stopped, my door was open and I was pulling on my western boots. Pleasure day, here I come! Taylor followed suit and we were soon inside the barn. Bailey was talking to the farrier about shoes, but when she saw us, dropped her conversation and left the pony she'd been holding with the farrier.
"Mia! Was everyone at school amazed by your awesomeness???" I nodded with a laugh when Bailey noticed Taylor. "Taylor!!!!! It's been so long! Ever since Mia got a car, you haven't had a reason to come! But, now that Mia uses her car for other reasons, you can come more!!" Bailey embraced Taylor excitedly before directing her to one of the lesson horses.
"See ya in the ring, K?" I nodded to Taylor and walked through the barn aisle to Cavallo's stall. My beautiful bay quarter horse gelding nickered and shoved his head at the door.
"Hey pretty boy! We get to ride western today! No fancy footwork." Cav made a face that resembled relief, and I shook my head at his shenanigans before going to grab my western tack.
From the tack room, I heard Bailey talking to someone who had just pulled up. The other voice was muffled by walls, but I assumed it was another client. Lugging my heavy tack back to Cav's stall, I saw Taylor struggling to do the same. No matter how many times I do this, my western stuff will ALWAYS seem heavy. I managed to set the saddle and pad on Cavallo's back before my phone rang. "Hello?" I walked from Cav's stall back to the tack room to grab a bridle.
"Yea, hi. This is Jason Park. From Biology. Is this Mia Sanders?"
"Hey Jason. What's up?"
"I'm at the address you gave me, but are you sure you gave me the right one?"
"One sec." I hung up on Jason. I Snatched a western bridle and made my way to the main barn aisle. "Right here Jason!" Jason's back was to me, and when I spoke, he turned around with surprise. "Welcome to Elite Stables!"
Jason waltzed over. "When you introduced yourself, you could've at least explained that to me!"
" There's no time for explaining. I've got a lesson in five minutes. Go all the way down this aisle until you reach the large arena. Have a seat in the pavilion, and I'll be right with you." I left Jason dumbstruck again and got Cavallo ready for my lesson.
