(I had this idea for an AU where Samuel was a messenger who read things like letters and laws set by the King to the public and this was the end result.)

Did they realize that this was what you wrote?

When I stood in the square with your letter in my hand

Your handwriting scrawled in curvy letters against the paper

The ink of royalty smudge against my fingers

With the orders for me to read it to the public

Did they know the words were from you directly?

The people were not happy with the contents of it

There was one red-haired man

Standing near the front

Interrupting and counteracting every word I spoke

I know my job says to read only what the paper says

but I added messages of my own

Messages of shame and mercy

I wonder

Had I been speaking of my own account

Would your soldiers dressed in red

have stood in front of me with menacing glares out at the public?

Threatening anyone who got near me?

I do not see them act so dangerously protective at the hands of others in the same occupation as me

Reading the same messages as me

If I was not hired as a messenger for you

Would they care that I read something for you?

Or would they watch as the citizens quickly turned on me?

I know my job says to read only what your letters say

But I added messages of my own

Your Majesty,

I pray one day to see your face

Instead of just being your Loyal American Messenger

The letters we exchange would not help you recognize me if you saw me in the streets

Your Majesty,

Why do they act so menacing

and protective

when you ask me to read your letters?
