Cold Hearted

Chapter Two: Free

I walk in silence alone, as I usually do, to the Choosing Ceremony. When we arrive, I'm forced to sit by Jeanine and her loyal band wagon. Soon there comes only 2 more names to be called.

"Christa Graham."

She picks up the knife, slits her hand, and quickly places her hand over Abnegation. The Erudite despise Stiffs. Everyone in Erudite boo'd at her decision, and the wave of gray politely clapped.

"Malory McVicker"

   I stand up, and all eyes look at me. Marcus Eaton, the Abnegation leader acknowledged me and held the try full of freshly sharpened knives.

    "May I say a few words?" I wasn't going to leave the person that stole my dignity without exposing her. He nodded. I politely took the microphone, in one hand, with the knife in the other, "I'm so happy to be here today." I look at Jeanine, then to my parents. "And before I go on with my next chapter, I must confess." I give a polite smile to Jeanine, and her face goes white. I lift the sleeves of my arms and legs to reveal the cuts and punctures that cover my body. "These were not done at self harm." I pause. "I was forced into testing, and pure torture by my parents and Jeanine Matthews. Every day, Ms. Matthews would demote me of my pride, and dignity. She put me under simulations and injected painful serums." Everyone gasped and shook their heads in sympathy. "This is why I'm not Erudite anymore." I toss the mic to Marcus and he scrambles to catch it

    I cut my hand. I didn't feel anything because of the rush of adrenaline coursing through my veins. I hold my hand over the dauntless bowl, and squeeze my hand so a stream of blood trickled into the sizzling coals. Dauntless cheered, and jumped up, running out to me. I was picked up and carried to the exit. Before we reached the stair well, I looked back to see my fathers eyes spitting fire. And Jeanine speaking to guards.

  She looked at me and grimaced. I shook it off and ran up the stairs with my new faction. I'm free. I'm actually free. No one can hurt me anymore.
