A tense silence filled the cab as I wound through traffic. All the while I was having an internal debate on whether or not showing Troy one of my hundreds of safe houses was worth it. I took me years to scope out then protect them. I didn’t want to waste another ten or so years trying to find a new place if this went wrong.
After several more long moments of silence Troy spoke, “Tell me again why we have to go to your safe house? Mine is just as safe as any other immortals.”
"Save your macho bullshit for someone else Troy, I’m on a hair trigger with my wolf and it’ll be hard to explain to the human police why you have an abnormally large Arctic white wolf in the drivers’ seat of a truck that’s wrapped around a light pole.”
He sat in a stunned silence for all of a minute, and then he broke out into great peals of laughter. Reluctantly I smiled in return.
“Lady, you’re something else, you know that? I don’t think I’ve ever had a pack member tell me anything like that.”
“I’m not pack, nor will I ever be. Like my job too much to give it up.”
“And you say you’ll explain that job to me? As soon as we get to the safe house?”
"Yep,” I said tiredly, suddenly struggling with the urge to find a nice warm nook or cranny to curl up in and fall asleep. “I’ll give you the basics then we can hash it out in the morning.”
He gave a sharp nod and we rode the rest of the way in silence.
We had been traveling further and further away from the middle of the city, highways turning into urban streets then to two lane country roads. I couldn’t take my eyes off of Amberlyn. Looking from her arms, toned muscles bulging from where she was gripping the steering wheel, to her face, tight with concentration on not letting her wolf out to her eyes that were glowing violet.
After another fifteen minutes or so into increasingly wooded areas, she turned down a narrow road and shut off the engine. “We walk from here, in wolf form. The wards around this place keep out everything supernatural unless I let them in.”
Turning to me, she handed me a small medallion with the emblem of a key, “This medallion will let you by pass any of wards I have around this safe house. You lose it, you’re S.O.L. Follow the road and I’ll meet you at the house.” After watching me slip the thing around my neck, she hopped out of the truck and took off.
Suddenly, my own wolf surged to the forefront, and I had to stumble out of the truck before I changed. Unprepared for it, I hunched over as bones cracked and shifted.
Suddenly, my view of the world shifted, and I was staring through the eyes of my wolf. Who, quite frankly, was a little pissed and aroused. Letting him take over, I followed her sweet scent through the forest. Running felt great and just as quickly, my wolf calmed down, stretching out my legs in lengthening strides. Her scent quickly got stronger, and suddenly I heard a snarl coming from a little ways ahead of me.
Amberlyn had heard me, and she was not happy.
I heard his footsteps. Anger surged to the forefront.I had told him to go to the house. Peering through the underbrush I caught sight of a dark brown wolf with a reddish tinge. His muzzle and throat were an off white. Like every werewolf, he stood larger than normal, his massive shoulders held proudly. Here was a beast of power. As he lifted his head his ears twitched as he tried to seek me out. He started circling, widening out as he went trying to sniff me out.
Closer, closer….crashing through the branches I landed on his back, teeth clamping on the ruff of his neck. Snapping his head back he snarled, his chest vibrating under me. Rolling, he managed to smash my head on the ground, forcing me to let go. Surging to my feet I again made a leap onto his back. He rolled before I could land forcing me to awkwardly land further away. Looking over my shoulder, I saw he was still trying to get up. So I did the first logical thing that came to mind…I ran. I heard him growl, and my hackles rose in response.
My feet pounded under me, taking me further away from the furious male. I knew he’d catch up to me eventually, but not before I’d played with him. I started back tracking through the forest, loving the chase, the game. I felt stronger, more alive than I had in years. Miles passed under me, until I found the place I had slowly been leading to appeared; a creek. Splashing across, I prayed I had some time before he caught up with me.
The night had quieted down in the presence of the two wolves running through the forest. Further up the creek was a pile of rocks and pool deep enough for a human to jump off into safely. Hopping rocks until I got to the top. I lay down and waited.
Troy didn’t leave me waiting for long. He appeared within my line of sight within minutes, chest heaving, nostrils flaring and eyes eerily glowing in the dim light of the forest. His head swung back and forth on great shoulders, sniffing and scanning. Slowly he turned in the direction of my hiding place. Crossing the creek he crept closer, sensing me nearby.
Closer, closer….I leapt, crashing into him from ten feet above. The next few minutes were a blur as we fought. Our teeth and claws regularly made contact. Finally, he had me on the ground, demanding that I submit. My entire being recoiled at that thought. Staring him dead in the eye, I refused. I wasn’t giving up that easily. He snapped in my face, and I growled in response. Finally, he stepped back, not breaking the eye contact, making his message clear: I’ll leave you alone for now however I won’t give up.
Rising to my feet, I shook my coat out and slowly walked in the direction of the safe house. I knew if I tried one more game, Troy wouldn’t be so nice the second time around. He trailed behind closely.
Something told me we weren’t going hash everything out in the morning.
