"Bri, you okay?" Mat asked. He and Brian, who was clinging desperately to Mat's arm, were weaving through the sea of drunk high schoolers at the party Mat had dragged Brian to.
Brian nodded his head at Mat as they emerged into the slightly less crowded kitchen.
"Come on. Want something to drink?" Mat walked to the fridge and tossed Brian a can of beer.
"Thanks," Brian said gratefully. He opened it and took a few tentative sips before he nearly crushed the can.
A girl he didn't know well but had seen in the halls a few times was suddenly inches from his face.
"Hi! Are you Matty's friend? I'm Tracy!" the girl yelled at him.
"Hey, Trace, can me and Brian have a second?" Mat asked, gently pushing Tracy away by the shoulder. She looked disappointed, but left them nonetheless.
"You wanna find somewhere else to chill?" Mat looked worriedly at Brian. He looked terrified; shaking, breathing heavily, and starting to sweat.
"I-It's really okay, Checkers. I'm okay." Brian felt like he was about to cry.
"Come on, man. I don't really wanna be here anyways," Mat gave Brian a gentle smile and took his hand to lead him out.
Brian leaned over to talk in Mat's ear. "I can walk home if you wanna stay. I'll just give you my keys so you can drive yourself home."
"Dude, no way. I'd feel way better hanging with you and knowing you're safe than being here by myself." They stepped outside onto the vacant front porch.
Brian squeezed his hand gently. "Thanks, man. I thought I was gonna suffocate if we didn't leave."
Mat planted a quick kiss on Brian's jaw. "I think I'd strangle someone if I was in that shithole any longer. People always get in my face. I don't know why I still go."
They both laughed as they ran hand in hand to Brian's beat-up truck.
