[Jason POV]
Age 13Yes, there were godawful things to officially becoming a teenager. You had to deal with the cards at your birthday from your grandma that said things like, "Thirteen years? How'd you grow up so fast?" in that cursive handwriting that was physically impossible to read. You were expected ask family friends how they're doing even if you didn't give one fuck about them.
You couldn't order off the kids menu and get the free ice cream sundae with sprinkles . . .
And you were always always always asked when you'd be getting a girlfriend. (Why is that the most interesting topic to discuss?)
It was, "Hey Jason, since you're thirteen now, when are you gonna work up the courage and ask out the girl of your dreams?"
And he was, "I don't know, Cecil. When are you going to tell Lou Ellen about that necklace you stole for her?"
"You know about that?"
"Well, I do now."
"Fuck you."
And it was constant. Not just snarky remarks from Cecil, but also from Dakota and Michael and some of his relatives.
Damn it, one time the Spanish teacher asked him if he had a boyfriend, and Jason, not understanding a word she said, answered yes. The whole class then proceeded to laugh at him because a boy confirming he was in a relationship with another boy was just so goddamn funny. Was he really that low on the gaydar? To the point where if he legitimately came out, everyone would pass it off as some practical joke?
Lock the closet again. He's staying in there for a while.
At least Percy wasn't with it. He never asked Jason about love or crushes or boyfriends and girlfriends. He didn't have a boyfriend or girlfriend himself. He even acted like Valentine's Day didn't exist.
Now that he thought about it, that wasn't really a good thing.
Jason had had a crush on Percy for, what, months? Years? Decades? He'd been friends with him even longer. It was the fact that whenever they spent time together, Jason would make him laugh and he'd start to notice that his eyes would squeeze shut and wrinkles would form at the corners, and he'd throw his head back and make a sound that caused Jason's heart to explode and his head spin and everything around him seemed 99.9% more vibrant and real . . .
Ahem.
Those small details helped develop the most minuscule crush on Percy, which eventually turned into: I want you to lay your head on my shoulder and I want to wrap my arms around your waist and I want to kiss you on the cheek and watch both of us turn bright red.
And sometimes it was: I want to fuck you in the ass so hard that you won't be able to walk tomorrow.
Y'know, hormones.
He didn't know if Percy ignored the often obvious nervousness Jason could never keep contained, or if he was just that unaware of it . . . either way it was infuriating. He wished he was brave enough to simply step up and ask Percy if he liked him as more than a friend. It sounded so easy.
