Unknown to Ann and John Loomis, the radioactive waves have died off and some people who have managed to take coverage are now building villages and colonies once more.
Unfortunately most of America is still in Ruins, so now married John Loomis is clueless to the change.
Of course, in the meantime, he has made a new discovery.

16 years after the ending of Z for Zachariah, Amanda Loomis and Robert Burden are now the two only children in the Valley.
John Loomis is now figuring out a way to make more suits that blocks Radioactive waves, but stronger and more efficient. He leaves the Valley for months on end only to return for a short while and leave again.
Ann Burden, now a middle aged mother and farmer, is depressed and feels her life isn't right for her. Her neglecting of love for her children is the reason why this story has begun.
Amanda Loomis, 14 years old. Brown hair, green eyes, and olive skin. Quiet, observant, and resourceful. Amanda decides to take charge when her mother goes into depression and refuses to cook for them and take care of the farm.
Amanda is very protective of Robby, her little brother, who is the subject of John's harshness whenever he returns. Amanda is curious of what lies beyond the valley, and eventually finds her mothers diary.
Robert Burden, 6 years old. Brown hair, brown eyes, pale skin. Sickly, naive, and very sensitive. He relies on Amanda to take care of him when Ann refuses to.
He likes to read, to the surprise of Amanda who thought he was disabled, and he desperately wants to be of use to the farm so he can make his father proud. Apparently loving life and nature, Robby is a self proclaimed vegetarian.
His favorite secret place is the cave Ann Burden used to take refuge in.
The two children, realizing that life outside the valley is something their parents want to hide from them, are now skeptical and as most kids are, rebellious.
And a rebellion it takes to discover that the world is recovering. And why it needed to recover in the first place. Lies and deceit make Amanda leave the valley with her brother.
And lies and Deceit help Amanda find life on the other side.
