"Hey baby we have been waiting for you." Lay-Lay said.
I didn't reply I just squeezed her tighter and didn't want to let go as tears streamed down my face. The emptiness in my heart suddenly got filled whenever I seen my beautiful daughter come walking towards me. I rushed over to pick her up and started to cry even more. I kept her in my arms while I put my stuff away and unpacked my bags I didn't want to put her down. I missed two years of my daughters' life and I didn't know how to make it up to her.
In my deep concentrated thought I came up with an idea. I spend the rest of my life with her and my wife to make it all up and never leave to go away ever again.
"Gloria, did you miss me?" I asked with a smile.
She just stared at me clueless. I forget I didn't introduce myself as her father. How can I forget the most important thing.
"Gloria it's me your dad I was gone but now I'm back and I promise never to leave your side ever again." I promised while staring into her eyes.
"Dada." she responded
" Yes, I'm your dada but you can call me dad." I replied with a big smile on my face.
After I explained everything that happened she got familiar with me as her father. I still failed to realize that she is only two years old and I told her everything about the Lusitania, Selective Service Act, Zimmerman Letter, and even Woodrow Wilson and expected her to understand it all. You may call me a fool but I wanted her to realize that I need her and Lay-Lay in my life and I wouldn't be alive if I didn't have them here with me. I was beginning to tell her about the training when suddenly she fell asleep on my bed without even warning me that she was tired. So as a great father would do I laid next to her and we were sleep together as a good family would do.
We slept for at least a good four hours until I woke up to the smell of pasta. I was surprised to see that Lay-Lay, Gloria, and I all ended up sleeping together. I slowly and carefully lifted up the blanket from over me and stepped out of bed. I put on my bedroom slippers and proceeded downstairs to the kitchen with a big grin on my face. This feeling is so great that I have just home sweet home.
"Something smells good in here mother." I said while sniffing the air.
"It's your favorite lasagna it's a welcome home dinner." she responded.
"Thanks mom but where are John and Markus?" I asked.
"They went down to the tavern for a few they should be back shortly." she answered.
"Alright mom let's hope so you know that he can become shell shocked at anytime." I referred.
She just nodded her head and continued to prepare the bread. I went back upstairs to take a shower I stayed in there for a good thirty-five minutes thinking about my future. A new house, a new job, and a new attitude. Lay-Lay came in the bathroom as I was drying off.
"Babe what's wrong?" she asked.
" It just feel so good to be back home and I'm overwhelmed with the feeling of being the best father ever just like mine." I answered while grabbing my briefs.
"I understand Gary we are happy that you are home but I became very worried when you didn't answer my last letter." she responded.
"I'm sorry bookie but I just needed time alone since my brother died right before I received it but I did read it." I said.
Before she can say another word I grabbed her and kissed her until all of her thoughts emptied out of her head. She had a lot of great thoughts because the kiss was amazing. The first kiss since I been back I never knew that we missed each other this much.
She then grabbed my shirt and handed it to me so I can put it on.
"I will see you at dinner Gary because I don't want my thoughts to come true right now." she said while storming out of the door.
"I guess, I will see you to then." I said talking to the door.
I went back to the bedroom to check up on Gloria and to see what her thoughts were. She was just waking up so I picked her up and went to find out where Lay-Lay was. I heard noise as I walked downstairs which made me get over alert. So I carefully walked down the stairs and as I turned into the kitchen all I heard was a loud noise.
"SURPRISE WELCOME HOME GARY!!" everyone screamed.
