Chapter Six
New Beginnings
Before Nadine set out on the long drive she called Michelle. Michelle was in total disbelief as her sister replayed what had happened just hours before. “Damn girl, I guess you never really know people until you either live with them or they snap!!! I guess I’m glad I gave you that gun after all. When I think of what could have happened if you didn’t have it scares me. Get yourself up to Boone and I’ll take care of the house. I’ll just make a couple of calls and everything will be fine. I’ll see you there tomorrow and I won’t tell Ma a thing, okay. God forbid what might happen if she knew. We wouldn’t want her to have another attack now would we?”
Two years earlier Marie had suffered a heart attack while living alone in her tiny apartment. She had scared her whole family badly that year, Nadine more so than anyone else as Nadine was the one who had found the poor woman and brought her back to life. Thank God for CPR. When Marie was finally released from the hospital some weeks later Nadine had insisted that she come and live with her. After all she had plenty of room and with her daughter Monique away at college she was lonesome. Of course she had her son Kevin, but he was hardly ever there what with football and all the other school activities he was involved in. Nadine couldn’t risk upsetting her mom.
During the long ride to Boone, Nadine had time to replay the past few months of her life. She realized that there were many mistakes she had made and vowed never to repeat them. She could not wait to get to the mountains and her family. As she pulled up in front of the lodge, she saw her two beautiful children out front rough-housing with one another. Kevin had the football and Monique was desperately trying to take it away from him. Nadine sat in her SUV and just watched them for a while. They of course did not see her right away and she was glad of that as the events of the past 24 hours finally began to sink into Nadine’s psyche. She sat in her car and sobbed uncontrollably as she realized what a mess her life seemed to be in. How could this have happened she asked herself? How could she have been so blind and naïve when it came to Malcolm? What Nadine did not know was that her life was about to become far worse than she could have ever imagined. Shit was about to hit the fan big time!!
