Leo's p.o.v
"Has she been hydrated?" The doctor asked, "Drinking a lot of water?"
"No, I don't think she had anything, I thought she was sleeping so i didn't disturb her." I replied
"Alright, we're pretty sure it's a more serious form of food poisoning, once she's stable you may see her", the doctor said.
I nodded in relief. I decided to call Nayomi's parents to tell them about her condition. My parents began to worry as expected and said they'd be at the hospital as soon as possible.
"Hello?" Nayomi's father answered.
"Hello, this is Leo Mr.Park" I said
"Oh hello, is everything alright Leo?" He asked.
"It's Nayomi, we're at the hospital..she got food poisoning." I replied
"Oh dear". Mr.Park sighed
"Uh she's going to be fine, I was wondering if you'd like to see her." I frowned at how unworried Mr.Park was.
"Alright, thanks for the call. We'll be there in a while." Mr.Park said before he hanged up.
That tone sounded familiar, too- familiar. In fact, it was, the same tone I offen used when talking to Nayomi; annoyance.
It made me feel guilty as I realized that Nayomi's parents and her husband (myself) weren't the least bit of interested in her health. Despite the fact Nayomi was in the hospital, very unwell.
The fact I displayed so little worry for Nayomi's health would probably be considered neglectful. Nayomi was really too caring of a person to deserve this. I realized that i was more worried about being held responsible for Nayomi's illness than Nayomi's pain. Damn, I was a total prick.
But Nayomi was really caring and friendly. Did she really have no friends and nobody that really cared about her?
It isn't that she wasn't a likeable person; if fact she was the opposite.
...............
The doctor came returned a few minutes later, " I'm going to go check on your wife's condition, Leo-shi. Why don't you come along?"
In all honesty, I'd rather just sit in the waiting room but i had no choice; I stood up and followed the doctor.
Nayomi was hooked to an IV, conscious visibility avoiding me looking at her, looking extremely uncomfortable.
"Feeling better Nayomi?" The doctor asked.
Nayomi gave him a tight smile and nodded."Well, I just need to insert this tube in your mouth so that you stay hydrated.", the doctor said as he pulled out a thin, long plastic vial. I winced.
Nayomi moved away, "You are not going to put that in my mouth" she said looking at the vial.
"But it's standard procedure. You need to be hydrated.", the doctor replied before looking at me. "Should I call the nurses to hold her still?" He asked me.
Nayomi's frightened eyes to me, making me feel torn.
I sighed, "Can't she remain hydrated by drinking water regularly?" I asked the doctor.
"Yes but only for an hour. She needs to drink water constantly first half hour the IV needle is inserted." The doctor said.
I nodded, "In that case, you can ask a nurse to bring us a lot of water. Nayomi isn't a kid anymore and I'm sure she'll take care of her health and drink a lot of water like you've instructed." I said.
Nayomi breathed in relief. "As you wish" the doctor sighed and left.
................
After a nurse came and brought water I poured Nayomi a cup of water so she could drink.
"I'm sorry for all the trouble, Leo-sshi" Nayomi said looking me in the eye. Before I could say anything there was a knock on the door, and my parents entered the room.
"Oh my goodness, you're so thin!" My mother exclaimed, "How are you feeling sweetly?"
"We hurried as much as we could" My father explained. Nayomi smiled wildly; making me roll my eyes at her practically glowing from all the attention.
"Aigoo our Leo hasn't been taking care of you." My mother said shaking her head.
"Aniya Leo's been taking care of me well." Nayomi replied.
My father smiled, "We'd love to stay Nayomi but Leo's sister will be home in a hour. Thank goodness you're fine." He said
Nayomi smiled brightly, "Of course, thankyou for visiting."
"We'll come vist you tomorrow morning with some delicious breakfast, sweetheart. I know how terrible hospital food is." My mother said sympathetically.
They said farewell before leaving, I shut the door "I forgot to tell you i called our parents." I said.
Nayomi froze "....That includes my parents?"
...............
"Nayomi you're a grown women." Nayomi's mother scolded, "Shouldn't you be taking better care of yourself?"
"I'm sorry, it won't happen again" Nayomi muttered with her head down in embarrassment.
I silently observed the site from my corner of the room with an itching feeling in my gut. I felt bad for Nayomi who must be feeling sick enough to be scolded.
I knew i should've defended Nayomi but the words didn't come out.
And think about how tired Leo must've been! And he has work tomorrow", Mr.Park added.
Nayomi's hurt puppy eyes looked up at me for a good five seconds. She clenched her jaw before speaking: "I'm sorry Leo-sshi. You can go home and rest."
I was speechless.
I was shocked at the way Nayomi's parents treated their child; like a lowly servant and it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I literally lost my ability of speech as Nayomi's parents stood up, "Well that's settled. Let's return to the garage. We'll drop you home".
"B-but--", I tried to interrupt.
"Don't worry about Nayomi, she'll be perfectly fine", Mrs.Park cut me off.
I didn't turn back to look at Nayomi hurt, rejected, slouching form as her eyes looked down at the hospital bed sheets with unshed tears.
