One Shot Stories

Passing Glance

So, here's the first story...Hope you like it...

They had lived on the same floor of the same apartment building for 30 years. But they had never spoken a word to each other . The most they ever did was exchange a quick nod of the head, a tip of the hat.

Their first conversation began by accident. Frank had left his apartment to check the mail and locked himself out. When Catherine found him, he was crouched in front of his doorknob, trying to jiggle the lock open with the tip of a pen.

    "If you have someone you can call, you can use my phone," she told him.
   
    "Thank you," he said. "I would appreciate that."

Frank had never seen more than a few square inches of Catherine's apartment. He hadn't expected the black and white photographs, or the dozen deep blue bottles, each holding a single fresh flower.

  "You have a beautiful place here," he told her.
  
   "Thank you," she said. She walked him through each room telling him stories about her own children. By the time she had finished,almost an hour had gone by and neither of them had noticed.

     After that day, Frank began to stop by on random afternoons for a cup of tea. Catherine later joined him for chili dinners in his apartment. They made a list of all the places in the world they had yet to see. They compared the lists and found that, of all the cities and countries in the world, the one they dreamed of seeing were the same,

   One night, after a quite dinner, Catherine gave Frank a letter from her daughter.

    Frank read the letter quickly. When he reached the last paragraph, he read the words twice, then handed it back to her.

  "When I made plans to move, it was before I got to know you," she told him. "I was all alone here."

   Frank had never thought about what it would be like to live without Catherine, for he had made her such a part of his life..
