I run through the forest, jumping over obstacles. Gun shots ring out behind me. I shudder. Hunters…

I step up onto the boat from the port…. it’s full of lousy thugs. I curse under my breath. Such annoyances. I walk through the people and into a relatively less crowded part of the ship. I yank my hood up a bit. Strange kid getting on a boat destined for one of the world’s hardest trails, I’d stare too. Luckily I only have to wait one more stop for travelling to begin. Still… It will probably feel like forever in this conglomerate.

I sigh, I can smell a storm in our path too. I go down into the hold and try to find a place to sleep. There’s a few hammocks. Convenient. I lay down on one, putting my bag on my stomach. Not that comfortable though. I slowly doze off with the sway of the ship. I hate boats…

I curl up on my deer skin bed. “Warm…” I say softly. They lights in the cave are very faint, perfect for sleep. I yawn.

Suddenly a gunshot rings out from the forest. It jolts me awake.

“Tsukiko! It’s the hunters!” shouts a familiar voice. My friend Yoko from the ocean pack. I jump up from my pelts and follow her into the forest.

“Amaterasu has already mobilized her pack.” Says Yoko running beside me. Sun pack should be able to chase the humans from our land. A gunshot resounds from far away. Yoko twitches in fear.

“They’re on the other side of the island.” I say to her. “And the sun pack warriors are phenomenal at their job.”A howl is broadcast from the top of the cliffs. I slide to a stop and Yoko follows in suit.

“Sounds like it’s time for us to counter hunters with hunters.” I say with a grin. Yoko relaxes a bit.

It’s time to hunt.

I am woken up by a load cheering noise. We must be at the last port. I smile to myself, the storm’s gotten closer. Lighting is beautiful. After all, the sky is the only place humans can’t reach. I reach for my bag and get out a book. My half-mother did pack one for me. She’s such a nice human. I wish all humans were like her. Kind and accepting.

I swing off of the hammock and head up to the deck. I want to be there when we set off, and maybe give a few false directions to lead us into the storm. I never said I had pure intentions. I walk up the stair from the hold and onto the deck. We’re heading off a small port. I hear a commotion.

“The best hunter in the world? Kid doesn’t respect us.” Says a man sarcastically. I sneer, humans.

“Every year, there are millions of skilled applicants for the Hunter Exam.” Says another. “But only a handful are selected. Don’t say stuff that you can’t back up, boy.” I sigh and make my way over to the mast. Leaning against it, I open my book. Such fools. I hope that kid doesn’t get deterred. I would say something, but getting involved is not my style. It’d surely lead to a fight.

An apple roles by my feet. I look up from my book, one of the crew dropped a box of the things. More snide remarks.

“Hey, losers!” Says a gruff man. “Don’t slack off!” The crewmen run off. This drunkard must be the captain. How scary.

“Hold on!” says a young boy. He throws an apple into the box. The scrawnier crew member thanks him and gets back to his job. I eye the boy from under my hood. He is suddenly distracted by the seagulls circling the mast.
