Sunday was uneventful. We can forget about Sunday.
Well, okay, except Sunday evening. Sunday evening was odd.
I hadn't replied to PJ's text from earlier on so we didn't get to meet up that day, which is why the majority of Sunday was uneventful. No post on Sundays so I couldn't talk to the postman, and Dan still wasn't texting me.
I'd made a system where if a person doesn't contact me first, I don't contact them unless it's urgent or we hadn't spoken in quite some time. I used this system only to find out who cared enough to start the conversation with me. Petty move, sure, but I felt slightly better this way. Keep in mind that I did take into consideration that people would be busy with work sometimes and not get time to talk.
Anyway, the reason why Sunday evening was odd, was because my mother turned up on my doorstep. A 'random visit' she called it. Personally I didn't mind, I was quite pleased to see her after a while, but I found it odd how she just turned up suddenly and without warning.
When she arrived, I made her and I a cup of tea and we sat down on the sofa by the coffee table. We spoke for quite a while, her updating me on everything that's been happening with Martyn, herself and the rest of the family. As expected, this was the largest and longest part of the conversation. It even included me making us both another two cups of tea. Once it was over, however, I decided to ask the big question.
"Hey mum, don't take this the wrong way, but how come you suddenly turned up like this? Not that there's anything wrong with it, I'm happy to see you, but I'm just curious."
Her face momentarily fell before she put on her already-used smile from earlier.
"I just wanted to check up on you dear. I mean, I haven't seen you for a while, have I?"
I was about to reply when I realised she hadn't finished.
"And... Well," She looked worried at this point, "I wanted to make sure you were all right, with everything going on, you know?"
I deadpanned, looked her straight in the eyes and said: "Literally nothing's happened. Since I left Uni my life's been pretty uneventful."
She shook her head, took a sip of tea and answered, "No, no, Phil. I mean on the news. Have you even been checking it?"
"No, why?"
Silence from her end combined with a nervous look. She took another sip of tea.
"Why?" I prompted her.
She put down her mug on the table and sighed.
"Well..." She paused, "Have you seriously not heard what's been happening recently?"
I was the one shaking my head now. Mum looked shocked.
"How can you not... Nevermind. Just be safe around this area, okay?"
I was about to question her further but she changed the subject with a 'So, Phil, what's been happening with you?'.
After a total of an hour's stay, Mum left at 9. I was about to check the news when I got distracted by my phone buzzing.
hey, sorry i've been busy. how are you?
To my amazement, it was Dan. I hastily replied with,
No worries! Frankly, I'm slightly concerned... My mother just randomly visited.
About a minute later my phone buzzed again.
is that not a good thing?
My reply was:
No, no, it is. I haven't seen her in a while. It's just... When I asked her why she was here, she wouldn't tell me the full reason. She just said that something's been happening in the news. You know anything about this?
