Leo's POV
The moon glinted off of Festus' golden skin as we sailed through the sky. Calypso had her delicate arms wrapped around my waist, her head buried in the crook of my neck. The gentle wind blew her hair in my face, making me glad she was asleep and couldn't see me inhaling the comforting scent. I stifled a yawn and shook my head. Exhaustion clouded the edge of my vision but I forced it back. I couldn't sleep, not when I was on my way back.
After being away for one year, I was finally going to see my friends. I smiled to myself, imagining the reactions that I would get. Piper would punch me in the arm and then hug me and Jason would shake his head in disbelief and Perc- my smile fell as a thought entered my head. What if they had forgotten about me? What if they didn't recognize me? What if they hated me? I shook the thoughts from my head. I was their buddy Leo, no one could forget me.
"I hope," I muttered aloud.
"You hope what?" Questioned a tired, beautiful Calypso. My grin immediately returned.
" I'm sorry baby, I didn't mean to wake you up," I whispered, leaning into her chest.
"You're thinking about your friends, aren't you?" She questioned, sitting up and causing me to fall backwards. I readjusted myself and shivered. I felt empty without her arms around me.
"I was," I confessed. I turned to look at her and saw her lips pressed thinly against one another.
"What is it?" I asked, concerned. As soon as those words left my mouth, she looked at me like I was the biggest idiot in the world.
"You're the biggest idiot in the world!" She exclaimed, turning her face away from me. I stared at her profile, willing her to sneak a glance in my direction. She didn't.
"Calypso, you agreed to this, rememeber?" I snapped, quickly losing my patience. I heard her sigh in exasperation, causing all my anger to fade to subtle frustration.
"Okay, it isn't that I'm not excited to see your friends. I truly am. It just feels weird. I mean, for a year they thought you were dead. How are they going to react to that?" She questioned, her voice cracking on the last word.
"That's what I was thinking," I admitted, "but if they're truly my friends, they'll understand." I was mostly trying to convince myself about the last part.
"Take us home buddy," I told Festus, turning away from Calypso. But tears filled her bloodshot eyes, and she wiped at them furiously. With Fetus on autopilot, I turned my entire body around and pulled Calypso info my arms. Her head rested on my shoulder and her tears soaked my jacket.
"I thought it was just going to be you and me," she choked out, her voice filled with emotion. I kept my mouth closed, desperate to not anger her any further.
"Nevermind," she sighed, "forget I said anything." As she moved to sit up, I cradled her slim hand in my calloused ones, surprising her and me.
"It's will be you and me," I stated, holding her gaze. My brown eyes drilled into her golden ones.
"Leo," she whispered, pulling away.
"It will be you and me," I repeated, "I just want to let my friends know I'm okay. I don't want them living with the thought of me being dead." She nodded and I could tell that, even if she didn't want to, she understood.
Smiling, I leaned in and brushed her lips lightly with mine. She leaned in to deepen the kiss, but I pulled away, grinning at her clear frustration.
"Valdez, you're going to be the death of me," she exclaimed, grabbing the front of my shirt and pulling me into another kiss. Without hesitation, I leaned into it, our mouths moving in perfect harmony. She pulled away, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
"If you smile any more, I might actually believe that you enjoy my company," I teased.
"Oh, I can't stand you," she assured me, "but you're a good kisser." Grinning, I leaned in and kissed her again, enjoying the way we seemed to fit together like puzzle pieces.
Creak, Festus stated, pulling my attention away from Calypso.
"What is it buddy," I asked, turning around so I could hear him better. The blood visibly drained from my face as I listened to the creaks and groans.
"That isn't good," I stated, my fingers tapping in my leg as a series of different possibilities ran through my head. There was no way this should be happening! We we're in the middle of the ocean!
"Leo, what is it?" Calypso asked, worry lined creasing her perfect face. Her smile disappeared as she wrapped her arms around my neck.
"Um, there is going to be some turbulence," I called over my shoulder, my fingers searching for the control panel. Suddenly, the light went out of Festus' eyes.
"That isn't possible," I yelled, the wind roaring in my ears. Ever since Piper had woken him with her charmspeak, he had never, EVER shut off. I found the control panel and pried it open, my hands working tirelessly with the wires.
"Um, Leo?" Calypso called. I whirled around, the worry in her voice distracting me from the current task at hand.
"Is that water supposed to be getting closer?" She asked. "It better be, or I swear I'm going to kill you!"
I turned around yet again to face the front, seeing that the water was indeed getting closer. Too close. I panicked, but before I could say anything, Festus lurched to the side and I lost my balance. I tried calling out to Calypso but the wind stole the words before they could leave my mouth. I tried to brace myself for the impact, but nothing could have prepared me for the shock that went through my entire body. You know how some people day that hitting water from high up feels like landing on concrete? Well they were wrong. It's much worse than that. It felt like hundreds of needles impaled my body, pushing all the air out of my lungs before completely submerging me in freezing water.
"Calypso!" I tried calling with the little amount of air I had left. My vision began to fade in and out, and I knew that there was no way to survive. I started to panic. Had the same thing happened to Calypso? Was she in the same situation I was? The very thought of that made my eyes water and heart ache. As I felt my self lose consciousness, I prayed to the gods.
Please keep her safe. I sacrificed myself for you guys and have never asked anything of you until now. Please, please keep her safe.
That was the last thought I had before I lost my grip on reality completely.
