It was my 11th birthday, and I was putting on my new birthday dress. It was a calming baby blue, with frills on the bottom and a bow leaning towards the right side. I was adjusting the bow as my mom called up the steps.

"Maddie? You almost ready?" She called up to me.

"Yea, just a sec." I said as I slipped on my fancy gold flats. It was my birthday, and I felt the need to look nice, even though I'm usually more of a jeans and converse kind-of girl. I descended down the steps at a half run half walk pace. When I got to the bottom of the steps, I had a strange feeling. Like life was about to kick me in the rear end, and yell at me to get up again. I tried to focus on my family. My mom, my dad, and my little sister Ariel, with a scowl on her face.

"She's still whining about the balloons?" I asked my mom with a chuckle. "Yep." she said. Usually I don't give in when she acts like a brat, but I was in a good mood. I went to the kitchen and untied the smallest balloon off of the chair that was holding it down and passed it to my sisters grubby little hands. The balloon immediately lit up her face, and it was at that moment that everything turned black.
