My name is Elaine, but you can call me Lane. Everyone does. Let's get all this boring stuff out of the way: I am 9 years old and I go to Larson Elementary School with my friend Lillian who I ca;; Lily. You might take a converse to the knee if you call her Lillian. I have dirty light brown hair that goes down to the bottom of my rib cage and very green eyes. My skin is tanned from being outside by the pool. I like to swim, a lot. My friends call me gill girl because I'm always in the water. Anywho... on with the story.
I don't particularly care for school, but I don't hate it, you know? It's one of those 'you're super annoying and I don't know how I feel about you' kind of things.
In all honesty, I'm not a good student. I'm not here to lie to you. I get in arguments with the other kids and I don't have a single grade above a D. Haven't since kindergarten. I don't think they're allowed to fail you in kindergarten, otherwise I would not be sitting in Mrs. LeVan's third grade English class learning about fragments.
English is my worst grade. I have an F, which is actually good for me. That means I've managed to stay in class and I'm not 'exempt' from the assignments. Dyslexia causes problems in English class, and my teacher could care less. Combine classroom neglect and ADHD and you have yourself a recipe for disaster.
Anyhow, I am currently in English class getting my hair pulled by Johnny Dunlow while his best friend, Jeremy snickers at the scene. I like to call them dumb and dumber. Johnny is annoying the crap out of me and I really really want to punch him in the face. Yeah I know I right? I'm only nine, but growing up in orphanages and foster homes, you learn how to make sure the other kids don't take what's yours.
I stand up and start to turn around with my fist raised but Lily pulls me back down into my seat before I can do anything."You're already at two warnings, another one and you'll be expelled," Lily says to me in a harsh whisper.
"Girls!" Mrs. LeVan exclaims, "Is there something you need to share with the class?!"
"No ma'am," me and Lily replied in unison. She gives us a glare and then turns around and continues writing on the board. Mrs. LeVan is the kind of teacher that no one likes. She gives out way too much homework. She's very short with choppy brown hair and a face that no mother could love. Sometimes I swear she's not human.. I think it's only me, but every once in a while I swear I can only see one eye on her face. But, every time I ask Lily about it she quickly states that I'm insane and that it's not possible.
"You are dismissed for lunch," our supernatural teacher states after glancing at the clock. All of the kids rush out of their seats and towards the door, eager to stuff their faces with whatever disgusting mush the cafeteria is serving today. I stay in my seat, knowing that Mrs. LeVan will want to talk to me, as she always does.
Lily gives me a sympathetic smile and stands up, heading for the door. I just shrug at her, knowing that she'll wait outside for me. I sigh and slouch in my seat, waiting for whatever punishment is to come.
"Elaine Gray," my teacher says with a suddenly very deep voice. Oh no I think to myself... She used my full name. This is not good, not good at all. She turns around and I almost scream. She only has one eye right in the middle of her forehead, and somehow she got uglier. Right in front of my eyes she starts to get taller and lot bigger. She pulls a club out from behind her desk and my mouth drops open.
This is not happening, you're hallucinating. You're dreaming. Wake up! WAKE UP! I say to myself in my head. I squeeze my eyes shut and reopen them. She's still standing right there, but she looks very angry now. As if on cue she raises the club and slams it on my desk, not even a foot away from my face. The desk breaks in half and I squeal, jumping out of the chair and backing towards the corner of the room.
Lily must have heard the commotion because the door swings open and I hear her yell, "Hey breath face!" The monster turns and let's out an angry huff of air through it's nose.
"Lily!" I shriek as the hideous creature starts barreling towards her. Lily pulls out a knife? She allowed the monster to approach her and then stabs it in the chest. It disintegrates into what looks like yellow sand and then it's gone with no trace that it was ever there. Except for my terrified state and the broken desk. How are we gonna explain this to the principle?
"Lane!" I hear Lily cry out. And that is the last thing I hear before the word goes black, leaving me in an undetermined amount of sleep.
