I listened as the three boys played one of Ron's games, smiling at their enthusiasm as I drew. Once they had started to play, Carl began to come out of his shell, which hadn't surprised me in the least. Our group was easygoing for the most part, not including the times Enid and Ron would fight, ruining the day.
I started to pack my things, sliding my notebook into the front pocket of my bag before I swung it over my shoulder. Ron looked over his shoulder at me and frowned, "Leaving already? What, your dad give you a curfew again?" he joked with a laugh, but I didn't find it amusing as I kept my mouth shut, not giving him the satisfaction of an answer.
Carl glanced over at me, and when our eyes met he seemed to understand my feelings towards Ron's comment. "Actually, I have to go too. Another time, though." he stated as he set the controller down and pushed himself up before looking back at me, "Mind if I walk with you...?"
My cheeks burned as I shrugged my shoulders, and with a soft 'goodbye' I headed for the door, Carl hot on my trail.
"Is he always like that, Ron I mean?" he asked once we were out of the house, and I shook my head quickly, unable to speak. He sighed softly as we walked, and a few seconds passed before he spoke up again, his words catching me off guard. "You don't like me, do you?"
I stopped walking and turned to face him completely with a confused expression. "It's just that you haven't talked to me yet...so I figured, um, that-"
"I'm sorry," I blurted out softly, and he stopped talking to look me in the eye. We stood there awkwardly, and Carl reached around to scratch the back of his neck. "It's...okay."
I nodded slowly and turned to face the road, and before I could make myself look even more ridiculous, I quickly headed home.
