Rain poured outside my house, hammering into the gutters and causing them to rattle. Droplets slid down the windows and created waterfalls down the wooden deck and turning into landslides in the lawn.
I was glad it was raining, though. It hadn't rained for months, so it was nice to be relaxed by the distant thunder rumbling and rain plummeting into the sidewalk. I watched it from the couch, admiring the way it sounded and the way it hit the ground. Outside I could see empty streets and mostly empty driveways, it was an overall quiet night.
A soft mumble dragged my attention away from the storm. I looked over at the boy next to me; his hair a massive mess on his head, his mouth open partly as he slept soundlessly. Luke still had his arm wrapped around my shoulders. I smiled, loving how peaceful he looked with his eyes shut and chest rising and falling lightly. I placed a soft kiss on his cheek before squirming away from his embrace.
I stood up, padding into the kitchen with slippery socks, my stomach growling indicating that not eating for 7 hours was a bad idea on my part. I grabbed a frozen dinner and slid it into the microwave and set the timer. I'm sure when Luke woke up he'd be hungry too.
I walked back into the open living room, noticing our unfinished game of Scrabble still sprawled out on the coffee table along with our cellphones. With majority of the power out, and relying on the neighbors generator for a few bolts of electricity, we were limited to the things we could do. So, playing endless amounts of board games and catching up on social media was the best way to go.
I grabbed my phone, listening for the beep on the microwave but it didn't come. I had a few text messages, and opening them, I saw that they were all from my mom. She was always checking up on me, making sure I was alright. 'How are you and Luke doing? Better not be fooling around. I have eyes in the back of my head.' I laughed once. She had left once Luke got here, heading off to work for the day, which I was definitely happy about. Alone time with Luke was rare, and when I did get some, (winks) I cherished every moment of it.
I sent my mom a text before retrieving my meal from the kitchen. I ate my Asian meal at the breakfast bar, looking out the open window above the sink. The screen was in, luckily, but still, drops of rain drizzled across the counter tops and into the sink. I could smell the rainy air, and could feel the foggy conditions of the storm against my skin. I peered over at Luke, who was still sleeping. I didn't want to wake him, he didn't get sleep very often with his busy schedule, but I also didn't want to be bored.
After eating, I put the leftovers in a container and set it in the refrigerator. With the heavy storm clouds outside, it was hard to tell what time it was. I turned to the microwave clock, but all I saw was a little black screen. The power must be fully out. Opening the fridge again, I noticed the light was off. So much for leftovers. I sighed, coming back into the living room where I sat cautiously back onto the couch.
Luke stirred and his eyes twitched under his eyelids when I sat down, but he stayed sound asleep. His skinny legs were flat on the ground, his arm slung over the couch and his head leaning to the side where my head used to rest against. He looked so uncomfortable.
I ran upstairs, nearly falling after bumping into a end table in the hallway. I pulled my comforter off my bed and tiptoed back downstairs, dragging it behind me. He didn't move an inch.
I sat down next to him slowly, pulling the comforter with me and wrapping it around us both. He shifted, sitting up and opening one eye. "Did I wake you up?" I asked, with an apologetic smile. He shook his head, his eyes flickering open and adjusting to the dimness in the house. "I've been half awake for a while." With that he smiled, pulling my body into his arms and swinging his legs onto the couch so he laid on his back with me on his chest.
Luke buried his lips in the crook of my neck but pulled away quickly. "You smell like Chinese." He laughed, adjusting myself so my head was under his chin and my hand tracing the patterns on his flannel. "And rain." He kissed my head and slid his cold hand under my shirt and drew circles on my skin. He must have felt me flinch, because he said, "What? Are my hands cold?" I squirmed and held in my laughter. "Freezing." he chuckled, wrapping me tighter to his body. "Is the power out out?" I nod into neck. "Everything's off." Luke sighed, his long, cold fingers trailing across the small of my back forming letters. He repeated the sentence over and over in slow movements, but it took concentration to memorize the patterns. "I," I could tell by the way his fingers moved. "Love," I smiled, knowing what the next word would be. "You."
I smiled, loving how sweet he was. I placed a soft, lingering kiss on his neck before snuggling underneath his chin. I felt his chest rumble as he chuckled. "Are you a bit clingy today?" I nodded, holding onto his flannel with my fists. Since the power went out, the air conditioning is as well. I could feel the goosebumps rising up and down my arms.
We laid there, wrapped in each others warmth until his lips brushed against my ear. "Y/N?" Luke whispered, continuing to rub my back. "Hmm?" I hummed back. "Will you dance with me?"
His request took me by surprise. I looked up at him, into his curious blue eyes looking back at me. "Dance? You want to dance with me?" I asked, smiling. Luke blushed, closing his eyes and biting the cold metal of his lip ring. "I don't know, I just- I want to I guess." He says embarrassingly. I chuckle, sitting up and pulling the comforter off of us. "Then come on, Hemmings. Dance with me." Luke opens his eyes and grins. "Hey, one second." He stands up, pulling his phone out of his jeans pocket. I watch him, at his crystal blue eyes, looking down as he scrolls down the screen. He's such a beautiful human being, even with his awkwardness and all.
A soft sound of a guitar starts strumming through his phone before he sets it down on the coffee table, holding out his hand with a small smirk in his pink lips. I smile, my bottom lip poking out in a happy pout. "I didn't know you meant slow dance," I said, realizing the song that was playing. I took his hand, giggling as he twirled me around and brought me close to his chest. I nearly fell, due to the sudden speed he pulled me at.
"I love this song," I whispered as his his hands left mine and touched my waist. I wrapped my arms around his neck, snuggling my face in the collar of his flannel. "I remember the day you told me you were leaving, I remember the makeup running down your face." His voice was soft and husky in my ear, rocking me back and forth as he held me as close as I could be to him. He kissed my cheek, leaving his face pressed to mine as we danced slowly to the song that only brought my tears. As the chorus hit once more, Luke brought his hands off of my waist and he knelt down to my height, cupping my face in his hands. "Y/N?" He whispered. I sniffed, avoiding his eyes. "I would never want to wake up with Amnesia," he said. "I love you way to much to ever want to forget anything that's ever happened between us. I love you so much, more than Will Smith." I met his eyes then, letting a laugh escape through my lips. "You started really sweet there, babe." Luke chuckled. "But at least you know how much you really mean to me now." And with that, he placed a kiss to my lips, and we danced until the storm went over.
